New guy here with my first post...
so when i was a kid i remember using a 99 (.243) of my dads to take all my deer. as i got older i moved up to a .270 and the little .243 was put in back of the safe where it sat for the last 20-25 yrs. i asked my dad about that little .243 one day and he pulled it out of the safe and told me to take it home and let my son take his first deer with it like i did.
i'll get all the info on it when i get off work and post it so some of you savage guru's can fill me in on it. i do know it has the box mag that drops from the bottom so it's not really a collectors item, but it's priceless in my eyes.
what i'm wondering is what base and rings are you guys using when mounting a 3-9x40? it has a little 4x32 fixed from K-mart thats as old as the gun is and when i tried to mount my nikon the front of the scope would touch the barrel.
i'm sure i'm not givong enough info so let me know what you need and i'll get it to you.

Date of manufacture is 1977. It is either a 99C or a 99CD. The CD had the monte carlo stock, sling and a medallion in the grip cap. Otherwise it is just a 99C. The bases you have are fine, but you might have to change your rings. Medium high rings will work fine, I believe with the low rings the largest objective you can install is either 36 or 38 mm. I have a burris 2x7x36 in the low profile rings and it is very nice. For the caliber my suggestion would be go with the slightly lower power scope and the lower rings as it makes the rifle a little more compact. It is not like you will be taking 500 yd shots with a 243! Good luck.
