Is this madness? Possible? Or should I just go for a 300 win mag or something like that?

IMHO, both are madness.

Really? Why? Is the axis an inherently weak action or something? It seems plenty beefy to me, but I'm no expert...

I could be wrong, but my opinion is based upon the fact Savage does not offer the Axis in any magnum chamberrings. On the other hand, they handle the 450BM just fine.

Hmmm, I suppose you have a point... It could be that Savage just doesn't want to provide "premium" cartridges in their bargain line though...

Really, that sounds cool. Maybe my next build will be a BM on an Axis.
Whats a 450 bm anyway Foxx? lol

If you google it you can find a couple axis made into .338 edge. The edge uses the same bolt head as a 300win/ or ultra mag. So a model 110/111 magnum bolt head could be used an axis to make it into a 338 edge. The 338 lapua uses a much wider rimed case and would require the bolt head to be machined out. Midway USA has factory savage 338 Lapua bolt heads for sell but I don't know if they will work on a standard bolt.

^ That's completely wrong....... The Edge/Axis uses short action bolt heads. For a magnum, a long action bolt head has to be modified. Read Dr thunders article on the home page.
It wouldn't be a good idea to put an ultra mag on an Axis receiver anyway....

Yes you do have to shorten the shaft on it but you can do that with a file verses having to mill the bolt face out. Their have been multiple 338 edge 110/111 builds and the axis receiver looks even beefier like a target action. But technically the factory 338 lupa has thicker bolt lugs, and savage eventually only made the 300/338 ultra mags on large shank receivers for safety reasons.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I'll just have to wait for a while and save my money for one of them new fangled ultra long range pea shooters. I'll just stick with my 308 and try to build up my skills till I'm worthy of the ultra mags [emoji90]
