View Full Version : Opening throat of long action for the long magnum cartridges

I am in the process of acquiring a magazine box and follower for the 300 rum/375 H&H magnums.

I have a pair of long action Savages that I toggle back and forth with .473" and the standard magnums.

My understanding is that the throat of the long action has to be opened up for the added length of the ultra mags and old style like the .375 H&H for them to swing those cartridges out of a magazine.

So if I do that to one of my long actions does that preclude switching back to standard length cartridges and working their magazines out of it?

Best regards and thanks

I think you are very confused......what are you calling the "throat"?

Thanks Sharpshooter,

I am referring to the magazine port, more specifically the forward section where a longer cartridge such as the 375 H&H or 300 RUM would need added clearance for their bullet noses to clear.

I realize that the word "throat" is not appropriate where it's used almost exclusively to name the forward area of the chamber.

So my question is whether I can open that area up on a Savage 110 to accomodate the 300 RUM or 375 H&H and then switch back to standard magnums or even standard full length .473" based cases later?

OR am I going to have to dedicate any long actions that are modified that way to only those extra long cartridges and only single feed the standard cartridges in them?

Best regards

I think I would be more than happy to single feed something like that ;-)

FW Conch,

Normally I'd agree with that but I am a bullet caster and in the instance of the .375 H&H I can cast and load it down to a level that might be a surprise. Also, it's a cartridge that is pretty useful as a charge stopper. If I was going to use a single shot in that capacity I'd rather use a Ruger #1 and not a "fumbly" bolt gun.

Thanks and best regards

To use the longer magazines, (the .375 mag is .220" longer than a standard la) the port is lengthened on the back end. I'm sure that standard magnums will still feed through that magazine, but it will depend on where the "shoulder bumps" are in relationship to the cartridge.
Once you cut and fit the receiver for the long magazine, it's gonna be hard to go back to a standard mag without some extra work to make a longer rear tab on the magazine to span the gap.
Since you have a pair, just dedicate one for the longer magnums.

Sharpshooter,

Thank you for clearing that up!

I may end up with a third LA to cover this ....... I actually have barrels for four of the longer magnums, .257 STW, 7mm STW, 300 RUM and just lately the 375 H&H ..........

Best regards
