Any one know where I can get a Savage barrel wrench for the smooth barrel nut? It must be in Canada or will ship to Canada.

Try Midway or Brownells.

Northland shooters supply (see ad on right side column) makes a dandy action wrench. Use that to hold the action, and just about any tool to loosen the nut....strap wrench perhaps, if you want to save the nut, otherwise a pipe wrench. He also makes precision nuts and recoil lugs.

Don't know if he ships to Canada.

otherwise a pipe wrench.

Bingo. Pipe wrench that old one off, pitch it, and replace with a regular slotted one. They're not expensive...

Myself, I use a Stillson or a large pair of Vice Grips and toss it in the scrap can. For the life of me, I don't understand why Savage went to the smooth nut but it's easily fixable.

Answer: Same reason GM went with a weaker spring in the ignition switch....cheaper.... and stock holders love cheaper.

Actually, it was an attempt to appeal to all the Remington and Winchester lovers who for years had bashed the Savage's looks because of the bulbous-looking barrel nut that ruined the look of the rifle (in their opinion).

Could be and probably is. Problem is, you cannot remove it without buggering it up. so, a replacement with flats is the only way to go. I was kind of surprised when I saw one on my 11 Lightweight Hunter which now has a nut with flats and a Bartlien tube.

Not sure but I think Savage arms is either privately held or an ESOP so stockholders aren't in the equation.

The wheeler model 123038 wrench will work. Should be able to find it on Canadian Amazon
