What Powder do you 221 Fireball shooters find is most consistent in your experience?

I will be shooting 40 to 53 grain bullets out of a 24" barrel.

I've read various sources that recommend RL7, AA1680 and IMR4227 and even H4198.

What has been your experience?

I have tried all the powders you mention but I've had the best luck with Hodgdon Lil'Gun. My favorite Prairie Dog load is a max charge of Lil'Gun and a 40 gr V-Max. Between my rechambered Savage and my CZ it has been the death of many thousands of PD's

Thanks, Charlie

I will see if I can pick up a 1lb. bottle of Lil'Gun. I also have a 14" Hornet barrel for my TC contender that I never could get to shoot groups at all. Might be the ticket for that also.

Just about any powder that will work in the .223 will work in the .221 Fireball.
I've got Lil Gun and it works real good also.

I do not have a 221 but I do have a 20 VarTarg. I am getting 1/4 inch groups with both 32 and 39 grain bullets with Ramshot Xterminator powder. Better than 4198, for me.

++1 on the LIL Gun. My 221 does 3650fps with 16grs. LIL Gun and a 40 gr VMax from 22" factory barrel and the groups are great. 13grs of LIL Gun and a 35 gr. VMax in the Hornet is a real shooter 3050fps and great groups. These 2 have ruined the day for 100' s Prairie Dogs
