i have the Cabelas Savage model 12 fv in 223. i am curious what these models are shooting from average to above average 5 shot groups at 200yds, and if you will pass on the load data.

Easy 1 inch groups at 200 yards.

Savage 223 model 12 BVSS. NightForce NXS 12-42x56 on a 20 moa rail.

I make all my ammo.
24.5 gr Hodgdon H335 with a 55gr Hornaday and a CCI primer.

HI Joebeck

maybe the model 12 BVSS stock has something to do with the groups, my 12 fv came with a stock that has some flex here and there, i do have a 12 BVss and the stock is rock solid on the bags, might end up getting the B&C tactical stock

The only photo I have of a 200 yard group came from my buddy's box-stock model 12FV with my 32X Leupold mounted on it. Ammo was factory Australian Outback 69gr SMK. The text didn't come out large enough to see but it's a perfect .5 MOA group.

I duplicate the load (as best as I can tell without having a chronograph) using 25gr of Varget and 69gr SMK BTHP bullets.

For 200 yds, practically anything you shoot is going to work. Even cheap factory American Eagle tipped varmint in 50 gr will shoot very well out of a 26", 9 twist model 12fv. I've shot it at 500 yds and it's amazingly consistent when winds aren't too bad.

But for hand loads, take a look at the 53 grain V-Max. Excellent BC, better than many bullets much heavier, and when loaded on top of IMR3031 or 8208XR it will shoot incredibly tight groups. Use the faster powders for the light bullets, and as for 69 SMK or TMK's or Noselers, 8208 is a really good choice there too.

Here is a 3 shot group I shot today at 200 yds, FV12 223 w/ a 4x12 using HSM ammo w/ 40gr Berger Match FB. I quit at 3 so I would not muck the group up.

And here I figured that's what the two black pasties were for!

Honestly, no, I was "recycling" targets. I did not even notice the "pasties" in the picture since I was so tickled to get a good group. It is an "honest" grouping of 3, no funny business with the pasties. LOL

A previous shooter had left the targets up, and they are thos "easy to see" ones, so at 200 yds, and me being 61 yrs old with bad eyes, I used 'em but I did use the pasties before I shot the group, not after. :(
