Savage M93-17HMR Feeding problem

Ever since I bought the rifle it has failed to feed Round 1 and 2 from the magazine. Shells hit the feed ramp. Rounds 3-5 feed fine. Called Savage and they sent me a new magazine-exact same problem, as with 3rd magazine I bought from LGS. If I push magazine up into action (there is a definite gap) all 5 feed well. Any suggestions on a fix? Hate to send rifle back to Savage. Bedding issue, maybe? Any clues appreciated.:confused:

I have same issue with both of mine. I too am wondering how to correct this.

Simply tweak the feed lips with needle nose pliers so the nose of the bullet sits a little higher.

I'm having the same problem with my 93 22 mag. They're sending me a new mag now, hope it works. I have tweaked mine with pliers and will put it to the file when the new one arrives. I saw a video on YouTube that recommended filing the top ear down a little.

Replies appreciated. Back when I found the problem I spoke with my gunsmith and he suggested the mag lip adjustment too. Didn't work. There is about a 1/4-1/2" amount of play between where the magazine seats and where you can push it up into the action and rounds 1 and 2 will feed. Same will all 3 mags I have.

If you have that much play it's definitely a bad mag. Most will only have 1/8" or less of play.

This is one of the many reasons I sold off my Savage rimfires and bought two CZ's and a Browning T-Bolt. The Savage's shoot good, but between the horrid magazines and the frequent extraction issues they're often more frustrating than enjoyable.

I have one blue mag that does the same thing. Someone on here suggested the stainless mags and I do not have any issues with them. I did bend the lips on the blue one and it works for a while, but it will fail again. These are for my 22mags.

Update: received my new replacement magazine today. Fits nice and tight and cycles perfect. Feels like a new rifle should. Kudos to Savage for a prompt response.<br />

Thanks for all replies. I will try Snowgetter1's SS mag idea and see what happens. Mr.Furious- bad mags? 3 in a row from OEM, LGS shelf stock covered in dust and another OEM from Savage all doing the same thing? Can they really be that bad? I'll try the SS mag route and the feed lips route before I give up. BTW-will a 22 Mag unit still feed the 17HMR rounds? Don't have any experience with 22 mag other than a PMR-30 (Wish that mag would work! :-) ).

I am about 90% certain the 17 and 22mags are the same.

The 22 wmr mags and 17 hmr mags are the same... I had to adjust the feed lips on my 17 when I first got it, and a little 800 grit paper on the alignment grooves in the back made them engage beautifully. The 10 round mags however, I find to be junk
