Time for a new barrel for my 270 wsm. I was wondering the thoughts out there if I should go 7mm wsm or stay with the 270 wsm. This gun will be used for 300 plus yard shots for mulies, antelope, and hopefully sheep one day. I have a 308 and a 325 wsm I will use for elk. Out in Montana, I may stretch out the range to 500 if I practice at the range.

My gunsmith thought I might should go back to the 270 wsm with a faster twist and I was amazed that Savage put the slow 1:11 in the factory barrel. The ballistics of a 7mm do look interesting.

Thanks.

I have both a 270WSM 11T and a 7WSM 10T and I can't favor one over they other.

The 7mm is my preference due to choice of projectiles. However you don't see the brass or ammo for it. Therefore the 7mm 300wsm is a great opportunity.

270 WSM can easily be necked down from 300 WSM in a pinch, but the 7WSM has a longer cartridge base to shoulder length making it more difficult to resize 300 WSM or 270 WSM brass and use it without making a false shoulder to headspace on during fireforming. Factory 270 WSM loads will be on dealers shelves long after the 7mm WSM drops from production. My vote would be for the 270.

shop for brass then decide. 7wsm is hard to find.
i have both a 7wsm and a 270wsm. id rather have the 7 for long shots and the 270 for short

my 7wsm is going to be replaced soon. it will become a 7saum just because of lack of 7wsm brass....
(this is assuming you reload, i have no clue on factory ammo for each)

I agree with what others have said regarding finding brass for the 7mmWSM. I do have a long-range setup in a 7mmWSM, and I've seen ammo for it, but can't find the brass. On the other side, I've seen brass for the 7mmSAUM but I can't find much ammo. The Cabela's, Bass Pro and a couple local well-stocked outdoor stores I have in my area all have at least one offering of 7mmWSM. Definitely not as popular as the 300WSM, but available.
When I decided on building mine in the 7mmWSM, I bought a couple hundred rounds of Federal Premium off Midway to just pull bullets and use that brass. I know there are folks who neck down 300WSM to 7mm and run the 7-300WSM, but that's going to be a reloader's choice only. For virgin brass, I plan on getting 300WSM brass, bumping the shoulder back and necking down to 7mmWSM.
Hope this helps!

What about a fast twist 270 WSM and shoot the 170gr Berger's?! That should make for a very lethal setup.

Thanks everyone for the input.. I do reload, so will study this further and make a decision after the first of the year as I am set for this season.
