Problems with Barrel Nut fitting faced and Rethreaded Barrel

I've been playing with Savage builds since 2005 and never ran into this problem. I have a Shaw varmint weight barrel that was originally 30-06 and changed to 308. It was shortened, threads recut and re-chambered by a machinist friend who has 40+ years experience on a lath and is an avid gun builder. I've used the barrel on a number of actions w/o problems with the barrel nut screwing on. Enter a nice 270 long action with Accu Trigger that I picked up in a LGS for $225 OTD. I broke the 270 down and cleaned it well to include the receiver threads and lug locking recesses. I spun the barrel nut on the 308 and that's when I realized the nut would only screw on up to the new cut threads. The nut does not screw on enough to be able to head space the barrel correctly. I tried chasing the threads with a triangular Swiss needle file and that helped a little bit but did not solve the problem. At this point, I ordered another barrel nut in hopes a replacement will work. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any insite into viable fixes besides nut replacement?

Just a guess here, since the barrel, as configured, has worked on other installations, it sounds like the threads on the nut you used may have been "proud". Since it worked before, you must have a nut in your possession that has worked before? Or, perhaps You could use compound to gently lap the nut on the barrel? Good Luck...Jim :-)

This assumes that the barrel will thread into the action without the nut ?

Your smith probably did a better job of threading than the factory. Options are use the nut that fit in the past or take the barrel back and let him knock the new threads down a bit. Not a big deal to do with the right equipment and knowledge.

Been there, (more than once) and had the same problem. "proud threads" are the problem. A little emery cloth to take the high spots off the points and you should be good to go.

Yeah, forgot to add I did try the emery cloth with no results. Will have to give it a go again.

Yes, barrel did screw on to the action w/o any problems with the nut on it. I'll try it again w/o the nut to see what happens.

Barrel screwed on right up to the leading edge of the action screw hole, didn't come anywhere near the new cut threads before the barrel stopped cold.

Problem solved with the judicious use of my triangular Swiss needle file and 600 grit emery paper.:thumb::tea: Now I'll have an extra barrel nut when it gets here next week.

As much as you work on Savages I'm surprised you don't have some thread wires in your box.

All you need is valve lapping compound and work the nut on and off.

As much as you work on Savages I'm surprised you don't have some thread wires in your box. This is the first time I've ever run into this problem in all the years I've been building Savage rifles. In the future, I'll know how to handle it if it ever arises again.

Rifle shot well today with 168 gr Hornady BTHP's over 42.4 grains of 8208XBR, 2753fps. Got the rifle dialed in at 300 yards after tweaking the scope.
