Cheap 308 ammo. Any shoot 1 moa ?

folks. I am just getting into long range shooting and have been posting a lot of questions. I want to thank every one for answering my questions. Great patient people here. I am thinking about trying 1 more time and buying a cheaper 308 cal bolt gun. 1 1/2 ago bought the cheap savage axis but could not get it to shoot under 3 inch groups at 100 yards with a nice scope even with Boyd thumb hole stock. Have had excellent success with their 223 ( 3/4 groups out of box ). heavy recoil for me with 2 torn rotator cuff surgeries under my belt and poor groups caused me to sale the 308 to a friend who beded rifle and put new trigger in it and it shoots 1 moa with factory ammo for him but he put a lot of work into it. I just dont have time and skill to modify a gun. I do not reload and at my age will not be. Looking for a cheap factory 308 ammo for cheaper gun. Want to shoot 1000 yard target shooting. Not competitor shooting just on neighbors farm.
Question.... Is there a cheap factory 308 ammo that will shoot 1 moa with a Ruger predator , savage axis or FV ( if I could find one in stock at cabelas ) or a Ruger predator ? I am not talking about the 4 big ammo companies like Remington , Winchester , federal , Hornaday. I am look at a brand of ammo that is $10.00 to $15.00 for a box of l20 rounds (60 cents a round ) I would buy in bulk and maybe save a little money. Could some of you share some of your success stories if there is such a thing as a lower priced factory 308 ammo that will shoot 1 moa if I was lucky enough to get a good barrel on one of these guns. Brand and gr of bullet would be great info. Factory ammo only. Thanks. Martyd

Only way to know is buy a box or 2 to try and see how it shoots. Once you find one that will shoot to your liking, then start buying in bulk. You may find some close but doubt you will ever find precision bulk Ammo. If you really want to save money loading thousands, reload.

FGMM is cheap. About 1.20 a round plus or minus. It should meet your criteria.

You could try the 175's also but if you have a light rifle the recoil may be a little higher. I find that these will give smaller groups in most 1:10 rifles.

Martyd taking into account that with 2 torn rotator cuff surgeries under your belt, have you considered maybe splitting the difference and getting a .243 Winchester with a 26 inch barrel ? with a 105 or 107 Match bullet 1000 yards is still with in your reach and you will have less recoil than with the 308 Winchester. id suggest you just buy a 6.5mm creedmoor over a 308 since your shooting factory ammo...less recoil as hardnosestreetcop said and better ballistics.

I am sorry for your physical situation, I continue to be a work in progress with ruptured disks though I have been lucky to beat myself back to some semblance of functioning pretty well (25 lb weight limit aside)

What you are asking for is probably impossible. Realisticaly a 243 or the 6.5 (or 30BR) would work for you).

You might see if anyone in your area is a barrel changer and could get that setup for you (the best deal on rifles is Cabella 12FV, but they are limited to 22-250, 204 and 223 and the 308 of course.

I doubt you will find anything cheap in the 60 cent area that suits your needs, probably impossible.

I will throw this out, others can weight in, you might get able to tune a commercial load with a hand bullet seater, but usually you need to start at the lands and work back.

You can dramatically reduce 308 with H4895, but that means reloading. I can see that not being good for the rotors either though age should have no aspect to it. Lots of help and advice available. Hardest part rotor wise is re-size, get enough cases and you could have someone run those through for you.

This doesn't include the cost of reloading or the time involved. Totaled together for 1 round of match grade 308 winchester that has been tuned for the rifle comes to $1.30. One box of 20 comes to $26.00. Granted the Lapua brass can be reloaded several times over, but you get the point. This isn't a cheap endeavor, and this is what it takes on the ammo side of the coin to shoot to 1000 yards.

Alternately, you can buy 6.5 creedmoor for around $26 and not have to deal with reloading. What you won't get, is $15 anything to do well at 1000 yards. A top of the line, custom made 308, with the best barrel, best stock, best glass, and best gunsmith, will not shoot well to 1000 yards if you're using cheap ammo like that. You'd be better off buying the Savage 10BA Stealth or Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 creedmoor, if you're not going to reload.

The American Eagle (Federal) 168 gr OTM for M1A is good to 1 MOA in a good barrel as is DAG military surplus which is hard to find.

If you're shooting up to 700-800 yards, then cheap 308win ammo might do the trick if it shoots good in your rifle.

Factory Match ammo for 1000yards in 308win will cost you lots and will not perform as good as factory 6.5creedmoor at that distance.

Even Handloading for the 308win will not be as good at 1000yards as 6.5creedmoor factory ammo.

Ok, the 308 graph is a JOKE. I'm sorry some people have no sense of humor.

Yes the 308 is usable at 1000 yds, but I stand by my statement that there are better caliber choices than the 308 if your goal is to shoot 1000 yds and have less recoil.

A 6.5mm like 260 Rem or 6.5 Creedmoor have bullet options with much better BC and significantly less recoil. Or go to a PRS match and see how many 308s there are compared to 6.5 and 6mm rifles.

Since you are just going to shoot for fun then I agree that something like the 6.5 creedmore (creedmore ammo tends to be cheaper than 260 ammo) would be a better choice. Of course you could also use the 223 that you have and get to 1000 yards with 75gr or heavier bullets. The 75/77 grain bullets will stabilize in a 9 twist. Not sure about anything heavier.
