about the Savage 12 FV

i picked up a new Savage 12 FV, stock has alot to desired, some call them tupperware, has anyone been successful reinforcing these stocks, and what would be a good replacement for bench plinking. if i don't beef of the tupperware i will be looking for something RIGID, without going over 150 dollars, what would be good choices for strictly benc shooting

well i took the fv out yesterday and did the regular breakin ect, after about 15 rounds of shooting and cleaning after every shot or two, i tried a few 55 grainers that work well in my other savage 223's and have to say this gun so far is not shooting nothing under 1 1/4" at 100yds, maybe needs a another 50 rounds or so, is yours a 223, if so what loads are working for you

i dont have a 223, sorry. I have seen where the 223 shooters are finding success with specific bullets/ammo

Hey Chetc, get some Australian Outback 69 gr Sierra HPBT MatchKing or American Eagle AR 223 50 gr Tipped Varmint. The Aussie we were hitting the steel out to 500 yrds the other day with np's and sub MOA at 100 yds on paper. The American 50 gr was under 1/2" at a 100 yrds. I only had 1 box so wasn't able to take it out further than the 100 yrds to see how it grouped.

That was me. Very first time out got a .6" 5 shot group with Australian Outback 69gr SMK loads. 62gr Wolf loads couldn't get tighter than 1.5". Rolled my own 69gr SMK's with Varget and popped a .26" 5 shot group out along with several .4" groups. This was done with the tupperware stock, a caldwell jr. front rest and a rear squeeze bag on a wobbly wood bench at 100 yards. The scope is a $159 Primary Arms 4-16x42.

I didn't so much as run a cleaning patch through the barrel between the store and the range the first time out. I seldom leave feedback on store sights but this rifle impressed the crap out of me.

His 12FV has shot very well once we got the substandard manufacturing issues sorted out (burrs in chamber, undersized firing pin) and his best to date group with hand loads using 25.0 grains of IMR8208XBR and 53 grain Sierra HP (p/n 1400) is an incredible .049 for three consecutive shots at 100 yds. Total group size for that same 5 shot group was .351". The 2nd 5 shot group with that load shot .647" according to his records (we were shooting 10 rounds per load increment for fine tuning)

The 53gr V-Max also shoots very well out of our 12s. Looking in his records, these are the results of a load workup using 53 V-Max, IMR3031, CCI400, and Federal brass. Loads were 22.9, 23.5, 24.2, 24.8 and 25.5. The 5 shot groups measured (in order) .564, .130, .235, .348, .295

Keep in mind, new gun, new college age shooter. So glad I decided to have kids!:cheerful:

that is so impressive, i am excited and can't wait till the next trip to the range, going to load tonight, what primer were you using with that group, presently i am working on a single shot follower hope to have it done today. as for a scope on my gun, i am using the mueller 8x32x44 target scope, going to shop around for some sierra;s 1400

The AE223GTV shoots a typical group size of .6 to .7 out of our guns, but not infrequently will put 3 or 4 rounds into a very small ragged hole. I'm thinking temperature plays a sizable roll here as I've read this load utilizes H335 which is a bit temperature sensitive. Many stores carry it, prices vary. Look at the head stamp and see if it has two dots on either side of the "FC" mark. These seem to be loaded with brass that is superior to what they used in the last run, and shoot even better.

The primer we use is the CCI400 for most of our loads, but we do go with CCI BR-4 at times just for gits and shiggles. And we reload the Federal brass from the American Eagle. Just neck size and load it and you'll probably never have to trim to length as they are at minimum sammi spec (.240) to start with. We get over a dozen loads per brass using this method, and never a split neck.

Nice group, but I don't think you measured correctly, it's in the .3's easily.

I do like the scope, i also have 2 Sightron's S III 8x32x56 scopes, this new Mueller is right there in clarity, i paid 239 out the door and thought i got a good deal, the next day on amazon they were going for 217.00 the pn for the mueller is MU83244TD only comes in target dot, it is a wonderful scope
