Have folks found these to be necessary with their model 10s? I get my rings tomorrow so will know if I need one. Would like to know what other users experiance has been. I have a model 10T with an AccuStock. Using a 34mm tube scope in low rings.

For my hs stock I needed about 3/4-1" height. I took a block of wood and sanded the bottom with sandpaper on a dowel, rounds out to conform nicely to stock. Then sanded the top so it was nicely rounded off and the height I needed. Then drill 2 holes through block and the stock. Stuck 2 small nails in holed (keeps block from sliding). Colored front and back of block with black sharpie. Then I put a Blackhawk stock pack (with zipper pouch and 5 round ammo holder) over it. Very solid and looks great because the only place you can see the wood is
From the back and it's black in color anyways.

Very cheap and looks just as good as Karsten and other option that you'd cover if you would use a pack anyways, as I do

Disclaimer: if your not a fan of a stock pack it will look like crap lol

Rifle in the background is a FCP-K 308w, Bushnell Elite Tac. DMR 34mm low Millet rings. In the foreground is a mod 11 in a Boyds stock (now sits in a HS3 chassis), Shillen .243w 26" bull, Bushnell XRS, 34mm low Millet rings. 20moa & 0moa Weaver rails.

I'm not sure where my brother got those cheek raisers but they work great. Gotta take them off for cleaning the barrel, but takes 30 seconds to do.

You might want to poke around here to see if there is something that will fit.

I made mine, a sheet of 12" X 24" kydex was just over $16 shipped.

If low rings will work you're probably not going to need a riser depending on the base you have.
I have found that the EGW picatinny style rails (as well as several others) sit up way too high for my liking even with medium rings though.
Another problem I have run into with picatinny style setups is clearance for the scope bell which limits scope movement forward and aft. If you don't simply have to have that "tacticool look, I have found A quality set of standard bases and rings may be the best option and offer a better way to get the scope mounted in a usable position.

I too made a Karsten style adjustable cheek piece from a sheet of kydex and some elevator bolts, and some knobs from the hardware store.
As with any type of project or recipe I think it best to check out a couple of dozen articles and how to's to help separate the wheat from the chaff.
Then evaluate see what folks did the same and differently and why and then put the info that's gathered into a plan.
Pretty darn simple and Kydex is really easy to work with.
With this one it was necessary to have the riser but now that it's in place and properly adjusted I can shoulder my rifle with my eyes closed, open my eyes and I'm looking right down the center of the scope.

Good luck and I hope you get it set up to your liking.

Thanks for the input all. I got my scope rings today, everything is all mounted. I do need a riser. I live in an apartment, with no access to a shop the DIY solution is not really possible. I have been looking at products online Bradley Cheek Rest -
http://www.bradleycheekrest.com/ looks like the ideal product (straps on, no need to drill) but the price tag is steep at $120ish. Can anyone suggest a similar product at a more reasonable price point?

I bought the Karsten cheek rest and have been very happy. It has given me flexibility to adjust the height as I have improved my position on the gun, and is very durable. Since this picture was taken have I glued a piece of neoprene to the top for a little better cheek weld.http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag34/michaelespalin/My%20Firearm/IMG_0922_zps20353f56.jpg (http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/michaelespalin/media/My%20Firearm/IMG_0922_zps20353f56.jpg.html)

Though I have not used the bradley I have tried several different stock packs that were supposed to be quality pieces. They seem to move around and are also flexible and just dont give the solid cheek weld I need to shoot well.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
If you're in low rings and still need a comb riser you must have a monster base on that rascal. Just my $.02 but I think I'd consider a different base or even the entire mounting setup.
Good luck with it.

So after spending some more time thinking about this, and doing research on the net, I am thinking that the Kydex, models requiring drilling into the stock will be the best option. The three brands I am considering in order of preference are:

1) SouthWest Precision (Model 611-02- provides multiple mounting options)
2) Matthew's Fabrication (similar to SW but with less mounting options- requires bolt to be shortened for flush fit (I don't have a shop)
3) Karsten ($20 more than above w/ less features than SW)

Any input members can offer on how these products work with Savage model 10 stocks would be great. Thanks

I bought the Karsten B version, has the low profile mounting hardware and the slots are notched. This means once you find the position you like, it will not slip up or down. The SW precision looks very similar to the Karsten. What I like, other than it giving me a perfectly relaxed position, is it is truly part of the stock; no movement at all, and I love how stable and heavy-duty it is.

I ended up acquiring a Fulton Armory strap on adjustable cheek riser in a trade. It's designed for the M1A (wider stock than savage) so I put some closed cell foam between the riser and stock. I have not shot it yet but have made the adjustments at close to the lowest setting I am getting a good sight picture from prone and bench positions.
