That is it. Remember that head is 9/16 long at the lug.

That won't work.....the firing pin is not long enough.

Converting an Axis to a magnum is not a drop-in proposition or else Savage would have already done it. Modifying a magnum bolt head (https://youtube.com/watch?list=PL6mstF7_2-gm3WnoBZZ1QLpjIeoFWXqg9&v=zMt3JA14Vn4) is, as far as I know, the only way to make it happen. It should be possible to modify the part you've listed, but I find the long action magnum bolt head to be more commonly available.

Sometimes I forget that people are reluctant to modify parts and your video was a great visual of how simple the solution is. Good job.

DrThunder88, great video...did you by chance check with PTG to see if they would make a bolt head to fit? Just wondering if there is a way to get into a 7mm rem mag on my Axis without permanently altering the bolt head? In other words retain the ability to switch barrels back to 25-06 on my Axis?

I did not end up checking with PTG. That may still be an option for a magnum conversion, but I don't know enough to say.

I'm not sure I understand the second part of your query. Just about all of the magna I am familiar with have a rim diameter of 0.532". This is larger than the rim diameter of standard cartridges, 0.473", so, obviously, a magnum cartridge will not fit in the standard, unmodified bolt face that the factory puts into the Axis. On the other hand, a standard cartridge may fit into the larger, magnum bolt face, but it will lose a good deal of its extractor engagement and possibly have other issues. If you're planning on switching between magnum and standard barrels, it is almost certain that you will need corresponding bolt heads.

Thanks!

No you've got it DrT, I want to keep the ability to switch between standard and magnum...so I need an additional bolt head instead of altering the one that came with the rifle.

I guess this means that folks out there are doing Magnums in the Axis, and doing OK???

If that's true, another option would be to acquire a replacement bolt head for Your action and have it opened up for Magnum.

My face is still intact.
