12 LRP 243 build

Hello everyone

I ordered a new Savage 12 LRP chambered in 243, and wanted to start a build thread.


Parts:
Vortex Viper HS-T 6x24 50mm
Vortex tactical medium rings
Weaver 20 moa base 99496
Caldwell XLA bipod 6-9"
Plano All Weather SCP 89717
Homemade check rest (for now)


No in boxing, ring lapping or base/scope mounting pictures. The weaver did have recoil lugs I ground off, but it did lay flat and even. This was my first ring lapping and I will say I'm now a believer.

First range day:

Turned top turret about 5 1/2 mil to account for the 20 moa base, looked good down the bore at 100 yards and took a shot. On paper, but low and left. Made my adjustments and shot again. Still on paper, but even lower and further left - D'oh! Doubled the wrong adjustment in the correct direction and it's close enough to start some groups.

First two range days I shot the following ammo in 10 3 shots groups over about 30 minutes. Started heavy on the first target, then reversed on the second. Shot from a bench on sunny days with a little breeze.

Winchester deer season xp 95gr
Federal PShok 80gr
Hornady Vmax 75gr
Hornady Vmax 58gr

The rifle felt fantastic, and operated flawlessly. But I know my groups could be better. Perhaps I need more rounds through the barrel, but most likely I just need practice.....I'm very new to this.

Second range day:

After watching lots of youtube videos and reading up on bench rest shooting techniques, I hit the range again. Same ammo as before, and same 100-58 then 58-100 rotation. Clockwise starting at the top.

Lowest of the 4 shots on top was the 1st fouling shot. Measurement was taken with the other 3.

Starting to feel pretty good. Gun still feels great, trigger is very crisp. Time for another round, let's try 200 yards. No scope adjustments.

Middle 6 shots are VShok and Deer XP. Both were aimed at the top target. I'm thinking the 1:9.25 is a little slow for the heavier bullets, you can see they loosened up a little. Top group is Vmax 75gr, and right group is Vmax 58gr. Aimed top and right respectivley, definitely flat shooting ammo.

In between range days I wanted to figure out what kind of cheek riser I needed. The scope is big at 50mms, and the weaver base just adds to it. Before spending money on something that may not fit well enough, I wanted to fab up my own adjustable version. Fabric was leftover from another project, pipe insulation and cord was laying around in the garage. A little time and help from the wife, and we have the prototype. Not the prettiest, but enough to help me figure what I need.

Looks like you definitely improved your shooting already. Handloads will probably shrink things a bit further.

My tc dimension with a 10 twist and 5R rifling stabilizes 105 grain hornady match projectiles and prints 1/2 moa at 3100ft/s,which suggests to me you should be able to run at least 100 grain rounds with a 9.25 twist.
Regardless it's a brand new rifle isn't it? And basically it prints moa out of the box,right? Which tells me it's going to be a great shooter,especially once you tune a load up for it.
I've never seen a savage that didn't print 1/2 moa with tuning.
Life you wanted to save a few bucks on a cheek riser and keep the clean look you've currently chosen to sport I suggest buying one of these spandex bullet holders that stretch over the buttstock. Once you get it on there just roll up a small wash cloth and slide it in under the bullet holder.
You can slide you drop sheet in the sleeve too if you've got one.
Vortex on their website has an app to calculate the drop for pretty much every factory cartridge made,and it will print up a reticle card too that you can tape to the rifle so you can at a glance hold over with the bdc reticle.
Anyway it certainly looks like it's going to him for ya.
I bought my first savage a couple of weeks ago. 22-250. My first 4 shots with Winchester varmint X cartridges went into the same hole basically. Smallest cloverleaf I've ever seen. More like an oval,like an egg
Sure they have their quirks,feeding for example when trying to cycle fast while misting prairie dogs. My dimension has a better factory stock however there are pretty much unlimited options for the savages so that's easily remedied.
I stretch my 243 out to 1000 meters with milk jugs and the 105 grain hornady match projectiles,so there's no doubt in my mind you'll be able to ring steel with that thing once your more comfortable.
And as you reach copper equilibrium groups will keep tightening and speed will increase too. After the first 100 or so it should remove as much copper and powder fouling as its leaving behind so it's just gong to get better from here.
I like the stock,a lot.
Any idea if those stocks fit on the model 11 short action?
Anyways it certainly is proving to be a consistent shooter. Do you plan on hunting with it or just targets.

They are seen pretty regularly on the web from 275 to 350.
