I have a ton of 556 brass want a different cal to use some of the brass with. Going to be using it for target shooting 223ai would be running 70ish bullets 6x45 would run 90s to 105 witch one would u chose and why.

What distance are you going to shoot? 9twist in 223 will get you to 75's and good out to 600 yds.

I'm going to get 1/8 twist in 223AI local range is 300 but might go out to 800

The 223ai in a 7 twist with 75AMAX or 80gr SMK's will have the same drop as a hot 6mm or the 6.5SAUM to 600yds. Still capable beyond that for messing around too! With a good barrel accurate ammo can also be loaded on a Dillon 650.

I looked at all of the 223 wildcats for decades and decided on the 223ai so I can launch the 80 gr amax and Bergers. The 6mm is neat but it doesnt have the legs like the ai does.

I was reading that one of the issues with 6x45 is that the available reamers generally have fairly short throats. So mounting out a 95-105gr bullet not to take up case capacity would require some skilled throat lengthening by a smithy.

So I recently just ordered a 223 AI barrel for improved shooting at further distances. My 1X9 223 rem hangs tough but could do better. The prime advantages to the 223 is the low recoil, low cost, and outstanding barrel life. Any 6mm cartridge will also have low recoil but a higher cost per round as well as significantly decreased barrel life.

6x45 should have long barrel life. Speeds will probably be a little slower or equal to a 6BR if I'm estimating correctly. However, ballistically the 223ai will out perform it easily.

A properly setup 223 rem will outperform 6x45.

Go 7 twist and shoot some 80gr SMKs!

Now the question is, how much throat do you need? Obviously not too long or barrel life and accuracy will suffer. But not so short that 80+ gr bullets are limiting case capacity.

75gr AMAX is another great candidate. Might work out a little better.

I told Apache that I want to shoot the 80 Amax and the 80 Berger so it needs to be throated for those. Talk with who ever is spinning your barrel and have a clear idea of what you want to do with it. They will make it any way you want but you need to know what that is.
