I acquired a Savage barrel in 22-250 that has some throat wear - actually it has about 3" of "freebore"!! It is the heavy fluted S/S barrel. I cut the wear off of it and plan on threading it and using it. What twist rate did Savage use in these barrels?? At 19" would you go with a 223, 221 Fireball or 22 PPC chamber??

I think savage had these at 1:9 or 1:12. You could mark a rod with tight fitted patch and measure the twist if unsure.

The 221 Fireball IMHO is best suited at 1:14 Although at 1:12 it would likely perform ok.

What kind of bullet weights are you wanting to run is probably the bigger question.

I'm a fan of the .221 FB. I think it is highly under-rated!

should be 1:12

The twist will determine the bullets I use. If it is a 12" twist I'll run 58gr and lighter. Leaning toward the 221 FB and lighter bullets now.

If you cut 3" off the chamber end, there won't be enough diameter left for threads.

Thats why God made bushings!

Only a fool would use a bushing on barrel threads.

Just get a new barrel and turn the old one into a tomato stake.

Shooting a 221 FB, this won't be an issue.

What's the diameter where you cut? Does this barrel have any taper in that region? I wouldn't mind seeing finished pics if you would post them.

Going from memory .920".
I'll thread the shorter barrel to 3/4"-16 for about 2" long, then thread the inside of the old chamber area to 3/4-16. Screw 2" of the original stub on with some JB Weld and chamber for 221 FB
It will be a while before I can get the chambering done as I have a new lathe and don't have a steady rest for it yet.
