Looking to rebarrel by stevens 200 .243, will also be replacing stock.

Would like to use a 26" heavy barrel in the 1:7 or 1:8 range.

Doesn't have to be stainless.

Suggestions?

My recommendation would be to become a site member for $12.00. Get access to classifieds. Lot's of barrels and stocks are listed all the time at some great prices with no wait. Site vendors like Northland also have good prices on new factory Savage barrels and stocks. Plus you get access to lots of advice and technical knowledge about Savage arms. And I've had several Savage factory barrels that with the right reload shoot as well as custom barrels costing much more. A switch-barrel Savage is the best bang for the buck.

There is exactly what you are looking for in the members classifieds right now. A Lothar Walther 26" stainless steel 243 Winchester 8 twist pre-threaded for a small shank receiver. Will fit your action like a glove

Yeah.....I'm the third vote for the $12. I've been a paid member for I think 3 years. In addition to the fer sale stuff, you get the respect and admiration of yer fellow Savage members when they look at your gizmo and see that you were not too cheap to spend the $12.

Well.....that's what they told me.....and they all had these little laughy gizmos posted right after that?

I know every time I post......they post with the little smiley faces!! See....you CAN buy respect!!!! ;D

The $12 buck membership is a sound idea.

The problem with Factory Savage barrels in 243 is they are 9.25 twist. Most rifle button barrels are not going to be in a 1 in 7 twist, but a 1 in 8 is possible. The problem with not getting a Stainless steel barrel is you need to have it blued, painted or coated, which adds to the cost of the barrel and makes the price difference between the two small. Shilen barrels are good, and at a good cost. When you consider the cost of a Shilen chambered select match and a Douglas from Sharp Shooters Supply (SSS) they are close in price. If you wanting a nice custom stock you may just want to get the barrel and stock from SSS, and save on shipping.

Just about all the custom barrels out there are good. If you do consider a Shilen I recommend a ratchet twist barrel, I love mine. Cut rifle barrels (Brux, Krieger, Bartline) last a bit longer and have a higher cost.
