Savage 12LRP or Rugar Precision Rifle in 6.5 CM?

I got bit baaaaaad this week at the range. Guy showed up with a spanking new, never fired RPR in 6.5 CM and let me shoot it a few times as he was breaking it in. He set it up with a can, Vortex HST 6-24, Harris bi-pod. Hardly kicked at all, and the muzzle report was so quiet that I could hear the sonic shock wave follow the bullet down the range. Never heard that before.

Later I stopped by the shop he bought it from and there on the wall was a M12LRP in 6.5CM. I'd have to get in line if I wanted the RPR. Might be 2 weeks to a month.

If I traded a few guns, I could get either, but not both. So which one?

I'm reading all the issues with minimum/undersized throats in the 12LRP. Is that issue behind us, or is this one (that's available immediately) likely going to have to go back before I even shoot it?

The RPR is an awesome piece of machinery. Both will shoot bug-holes with off the shelf ammo. RPR has a hammer forged barrel, the LRP is a very heavy barrel.

Decisions, decisions.

I wouldn't want that decision right now.. I think its gonna come down to do you want the chassis or the stock? And the age old question of what are you gonna us it for?

while i love my savages id go with the RPR...you have already made up your mind(i can tell by your post)so just order the RPR.

With how easy it is to rebarrel a savage, Id just stick with what has the longest track record

The RPR is a solid platform and highly upgradable. Literally the decision is. Etween the chassis or the stock. I've seen the RPR in action and it's a reliable set up and can easily be rebarrled as well.

I decided that the new gun will have to wait a while as I didn't want to part with my Browning Citori 12ga, and instead put a new Criterion match barrel on my 12BVSS. Already shooting much smaller groups and I've only started to work up loads.

Should quench the thirst for a while......maybe....I hope.

I would think a good decision not to part with the Citori for a Ruger. No comparision in quality, function and not an even trade $ wise..

My Citori would be the last thing to trade away, well..... except if it was a Superimposed:o

Put a regular Ruger in a Chassis and buy a nut from PTG, then add the barrel that makes you happy. Instant RPR for half price, plus you get CRF!!

I think you would have a hard time doing all that for 1/2 the price.... Maybe close to the same, but probably a bit over.

Also I haven't even seen any Chassis systems that are inletted for the Ruger action.

MDT LSS has a Ruger M77 short action. So, $400 for the chassis, and I see used M77s going for about $600 minimum here. Plus the barrel, furniture and rail, minus whatever parting out you can do...I'd guess it'd be about the same price as a new RPR.

It would be a sweet project though.

My M12 lrp shoots 4" groups @ 1000 yards with Berger hybrid 140

Yeah, probably not half.
Around here M77's are $450. MDT is one of a few, but $399. Buttstock $20. Pistol Grip ~$20.
Gives you $890. If you bought super magic barrel call it $400, Nut is $15

RPR's are $1400-1600

Comes down to if you want to buy something, or build what you want. Not unlike the notion behind a Savage :cool: With the M77, you CRF if that matters to you. Makes me happy, but not for all.

i know I'm suffering from CRS when I can't remember what CRF means :noidea:

Anyway, RPR will have to wait a bit longer now, Cabelas had the 12FV's on sale and friend owed me some coin for working on his scooter, so with that and the factory rebate, a new 12FV in 22-250 is being broken in now, and that sucker shoots tiny groups!
