My wife shoots a switch barrel savage in .243/.308 I put together for her. I shoot a .270 and now she wants something different in a .27 cal. and wants to stay with her rifle platform. A bit of searching turned me on to the .270-08. Would it be possible to take a 6.8 SPC barrel and ream it out to fit a .308 length cartridge? How about cutting and setting back a .270 Win. barrel then chambering? Would one way be better than the other. Is it even possible? Or should I just start from scratch? Oh and I do understand a 7mm-08 or .260 would be easier and cheaper but that's not what she wants.

270/08 would be doable, but kind of expensive in the long run. Finding a gunsmith that has the reamer you need may take some work. Or you can buy the reamer yourself, kinda costly and not much return on investment. Then there's reloading dies. Full custom, and also costly. Loading data? You're starting from scratch. To me it would be far easier to convince her to go 7/08 or 260 and take the money you save by not going the 270 route and buy her lots of ammo or upgrade her glass. But if she truly insists on a 270 caliber cartridge, I'd go with a small shank 270 WSM and load it down to comfortable levels for her to shoot. As she gets more comfortable with it, you can turn up the heat some. You should be able to pick up a 270 WSM takeoff for less than $100, and turning it down to a small shank and rethreading shouldn't cost more than $100. The WSM's will feed out of the standard 243/308 magazine - providing you're working with a centerfeed action, and a quick bolt face swap should have you up and running in no time.

I can't see why not. Here is Kiff's print for the 270-08 and the link to SAAMI's print for the 6.8.

Dave (CH4D) will make the dies, 86 bucks and change.

BTW, I shoot the improved version.

You might call the Redding dies people. As I recall, they have a custom die for a .270 Redding which I remember being a .270-08 with a 30 degree shoulder. They may know who has the reamer for it or a .270-08. Even though they list the dies for it, I would be surprised if they are in stock and the lead time can be substantial.

I know you said the decision has been taken in this project, but I can not help but comment that the 6.5-08 (.260 Rem), 6.5x47 Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor or any number of other 6.5s or the 7-08 or any of its variants are superior not only in terms of "on paper" ballistics, but the selection of bullets in 6.5mm or 7mm is vastly superior to those for the .270. Any of these can be loaded with a wide range of bullet weights for different uses. They are not "fussy" and known good load combinations are not that hard to find.

If you have access to a 6.5mm of some description a range trip might provide a basis for a change of heart.

she wants something different in a .27 cal.

'Nough said! Why try and talk him out of it? Some fellas never learn that one of the keys to marital bliss is KEEP MOMMA HAPPY.

OP,
You might get with Bill and maybe borrow that reamer and pick up some dies from CH4D. The improved will make that a very versatile cartridge.
