Here's my father's old Model 99 chambered in 300 Savage. I tried to date it but it has a very low # that dates it as a Model 1895. There is no stamped letter on the lever. Any input regarding this example would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some pictures. It also has an unusual trigger pad. My father never did any modifications to it but maybe a previous owner did. I believe he got it in the late 60's-early 70's.

Take your buttplate off and it will have the serial number stamped on it and the stock, the forearm should have the same serial number stamped on the back of it.

Curious gun. Could have been a couple of things. Might have been an early model RS with the flat bottomed studs that I see on it and the forearm was swapped. Thought it was a model EG at first but the checkering on the forearm isn't EG checkering. Could have also been a lunch box special that one of the workers at Savage just built in his spare time and the serial number on the receiver wasn't completed. Really strange.

Let me know what you find on the buttplate and buttstock.

I removed the buttplate & there was indeed a digit missing in the beginning. The Model 99 dates to 1949. There are also two letters stamped smaller and off to the lower right side. Could that be the builder's initials?

Also, was the trigger pad a factory option or an aftermarket item? I couldn't find any examples in a brief online search.

Thanks for the input. It nice to get some history on it.

The trigger shoe is just an add on, not factory.

The DD stamps are most likely assembly marks.

Thanks, I plan to do so since my father has a lot of old ammo that is itching to be freed.

If the forearm checkering isn't representative of the EG, could it be a model G?

G would have a take down lever or remnants of one. It almost looks like the old 250-3000 checkering and it's wearing Savage 99RS sling studs. It's got me baffled, looks like a few other parts were used to make it. I really think it was an RS and someone changed the forearm. I know if you pull the forearm off and see if the numbers on it are the same as the serial number on the gun then I'm wrong on all accounts. Give it a look, my feelings won't be hurt if I'm wrong.

I removed the forearm & took a few photos. The serial # matches that found on the rest of the gun. Let me know what you think and if you want other shots. Thanks.

Nope, that's a better pic, it's a model EG, it's legit.

Whats cool is that I think those sling studs might have been factory added, not aftermarket.

Your gun was made around 48 or 49 right at the time of the Savage factory move to Chicopee from Utica, I'm wondering if they were using up sling studs from the model RS guns from Utica.

The first pic looked like it had two point checkering near the rear of the forearm now I see it's just one.

Thanks for the info. I found out it was originally purchased by my grandfather who used it as his "brush" gun when pig hunting. He later gave it to my father who recently passed it on to me. I guess its time to look for some pigs. Well, at least some paper ones first.

I love the .300 savage round. It is so close to the .308 that there is no worry about shooting any medium game with it. Since it was drilled for scope blocks you could put an old weaver K-4 or K-6 on it and it would look right at home on it. I have a clean K-4 I love. It is on a take down in .303 savage.
