It is about time for me to start load development for my son's .300 Win Mag.. This is a Browning A-Bolt Gold Medallion that we gave him a couple of years ago. Any suggestions for bullet and powder type/charge? Will start a few of grains below any suggested loads and work my way up. All suggestions will be appreciated.

I have been working on loads for my 110 in 300 WM, so far I have tried 180 gr Sierra pro hunter bullets with flat bases and 180 gr Sierra gamekings with boat tails with Imr 7828 and H- 4831 powders. I have had my best results with the 4831 and pro hunters, so far I have worked up to 73.5 grains, I usually get the first 2 rounds touching and the 3rd will go about an inch high, i am guessing due to barrel heat since that skinny sporter barrel heats up fast.

My wifes A-bolt likes 72 grains of H4831 and the 180 Accubond.

My custom and every other 300 Mag I have ever owned love the 165gr Sierra and then the 165 Nosler ahead of 70 grains of IMR 4350.

Will be hunting whitetails in Alabama. Yes, this gun is a kind of overkill for whitetails, but my son (19) does love to shoot it.
Thanks for all the replies. You have all been great help.

For whitetail I would shoot a heavy bullet at youth load levels.

You will still have effective range out to 300+ and its just been my poor experience that going smaller and faster is disaster when you are trying to save the meat.

YMMV

73.0 grains H-4831 SC, 180 Nosler Accubond with CCI 250 primers. Shoots very well out of 4 Encores, 1 Ruger M77 and a custom built .300 Win Mag. Chronographs from 2850-2950 depending on barrel length.
