I mainly shoot at a club range from 50 to 300 yards with an occasional trip for chucks. Would this be a good rifle for my shooting in 223 cal ?

Yes, although personally I'd go with a .243

Savage has a rebate program ongoing, and you can get $100 rebate on any model 12. If you start with a model 12FV in 223 (or 243) which is a very accurate rifle and lists for $429 but typically sells for $389 at Cabelas (sometime cheaper..look for spring sale) you won't break the bank even after you buy an aftermarket stock, bi-pod, scope and mounts etc.
If you want the removable magazine, that'll add about $300 unless you do it yourself with aftermarket parts.

+1 on the 243. My go to for ground hogs. Can be made very accurate for that kind of shooting, especially if you reload.

Two things to consider. Cost of factory ammo and/or cost of components to reload your own. .223 is much cheaper to shoot.
If you shoot much the .243 barrel will wear out quicker than a 223Rem due to the higher/ hotter gas erosion of the throat.

Both are inherently accurate cartridges.

I just got a Model 10 .223 FCP and my only complaint is I now have two factory mags whose lips don't hold cartridges securely. I think I have one of them sorted out now (the other mag is going back). The rifle itself is great. Great trigger, nice take down, safety etc.

Yes. .223 would be perfect for targets and groundhogs. I personally would choose it over a .243 for those applications.

I am already setup for reloading 223 so I prefer to stay with a 223. I have a lot of brass and components.
What is the story on a removable magazine ? Don't they both come with one ?

Yes it came with one. One it came with is finicky when loaded with 4 rounds. I bought a second factory mag that I just got today and it's terrible. On both, the lips aren't adjusted correctly. The one I got today, when I clicked it in, all 4 rounds shot straight up out of the mag and the rifle. I then barely pushed the mag in ever so gently and chambered a round. When I ejected that round, the round underneath shot up too (i.e. two rounds ejected at once). Did it again with the same thing. Did it several times and multiple rounds eject. Clearly, the lips aren't adjusted correctly (need to be bent in). I'm returning the second mag and sticking with the one that came with the rifle.
