thinking about doing a barrel swap on one of my savages and i'm abit confused whats the diference between the lg shank and the short shank barrels i also see guy talking about a switch barrel system ?

It's large shank (1.120x20tpi) vs. *small* shank (1.055x20tpi), not 'short'. Different thread diameter, because some receivers were designed bigger around than others. The barrels will not interchange between the receivers, but you can unscrew a small shank barrel and screw it on another small shank without any problem, and vice versa.

I prefer the large shank series for heavy custom barrels.....the advantage of the small shank series are more aftermarket & factory take offs are available in the small shank......but any custom bbl builder can/will build a large shank bbl.....nothin' like a large shank Pac Nor with a nut......

Actually the receiver has the same outside diameter. The front ring is just bored out more and threaded to accomodate the large shank barrel. Other than that the dimensions are basically the same.

thanks for the link and info now if i dont redo one of my savages that i already have i will know what to look for (barrel nut size) not looking for a heavy hitter thinking about something in the 7-08 -223 range


edit checked last night all 3 rifles stanard shanks so i will be good to go
