I have a savage target action mated to a mcgownen 204 barrel. I put a 204 casing in this rifle a blank of course and it will not extract not even acting like it wants too. Is this a factory problem? I read somewhere that Fred may have an improved extractor don't know if that will help.

Just wonder if any of you have experienced this situation? I did do a search but no answer.

thanks

Check head space, extractor may have not snapped over rim of go gauge.

If this is not the issue the remove the barrel and make sure you have enough protrusion of the case from the breach for the bolt face to contact the case head.

ok after 2 weeks dealing with this thing I finally figured it out. Took a 22-250 piece of brass and everything fit the bolt. Hmmm time for investigation here is what I found out the savage target action comes only with 473 boltface I didn't know that. So another 30 bux in parts to get this action set-up for 378 boltface and it aint easy to get the parts. Seems Brownells had every part but one and it takes 2 months to get but I can get it directly from Savage.

For some reason Savage will only sell the botlface to an ffl but Brownells will sell it direct.

thanks for the replies all appreciated

You can also check into PT&G for a bolt head replacement.

The target action also comes with the 378 bolt face. You just have to get the right one. Sounds like someone re-barreled the action and didn't do it correctly.

Remember to check / set the headspace when you get the appropriate bolt face.

thanks for the tip gunparts. part nr is 104876 they get 6.00 more than savage I wish I had known this I don't know if my ffl will be able to get them for me or not. First they wanted an ffl now they want a ffl gunsmith.

One thing gunparts shows his part for a short action but I have a long action but his part nr the same as savages.

thanks

When you change bolt head you also have to change the extractor! They are not the same. I learned the hard way when I converted my LRPV from 204 ruger to 6BR. Bought a PTG bolt head and the original extractor from 204 bolt head was too long and prevented the bolt from closing.
