I would choose a Nikon over a Vortex everytime but that's just me.

I'll never get another NIkon. I had the zoom lock up on one when it was about 6 months old. They refused to fix it, and claimed it was abuse. I still have that $450 paperweight around here somewhere.

With Optics, you get what you pay for and Leupold and Vortex are good, but I'd keep what you have until you can afford something significantly better. A $219 Nikon isn't it. I'd be looking at the Leupold VX3 or Vortex Viper.

I have both the Nikon and the Crossfire II. The Nikon has better optics, much clearer, but it's parellax is pre-focused at 100 yds, same with the Crossfire. If you want to shoot well at distances over 100 yds, you might be better off spending more on your glass. The SWFA is highly regarded here, I don't own one but maybe others here will advise you on which model to look at.

Honestly, 2-300 yards is a close chip-shot. You really don't need anything special, unless you want to watch the chucks eyelashes while shooting.
If you want magnification:
Primary Arms 4-14X FFP mil/mil blows anything short of the $600-ish range out of the water. Frankly it flat embarrasses the SWFA 3-15 for optics at distance.
Next up for the Sub $1100 range is a Weaver Tactical 3-15. #800363.
Beyond that the SWFA 5-20 is a VERY impressive piece of glass. above that I can't afford:cool:

I have both the P223 4x12x40 and the crossfire II 4x12x40. The P223 is far superior in my opinion Much Much clearer in the higher magnifications and pulls in light a lot better in those late evening hunts. I got the crossfire because I got a sweet deal on it on BF. $99. But I got my nikon barely used for $150 off a member here.

Side note the p223 and my Redfield Revolutions 4x12x40 are very close in Clarity.
