Our old Savage 99 is now 58 years old. It is a .308. I want to dig it out and do some shooting and if all goes well accuracy wise, use it for hunting this fall. With that said, what is the best factory ammo and bullet weight to play with in this old rifle? Thanks

Your rifle will tell you what it likes "the best".
Unless you have some mechanical issues with it, use whatever you would like. The 99's aren't weak.

I tried both Remington Core-Lokt and Winchester PowerPoint, 150 grain, and it shot them both about the same. Not great accuracy, but enough for 150 yard blacktails.

Factory ammo changes fairly frequently, so there isn't an answer. Personally I would try 165gr stuff.
