Anyone know how much needs machined off back of long action bolt head to convert it to short action

might be able to extrapolate off of this article, but why? Seems a whole lot easier and more predictable to just order a new one from Midway or the factory and sell what you have.

.125 is all that needs to be removed.
What size face do you need? I have a bunch of .223's

Just order one from Savage, save yourself the headache of trying to find or modify one.

You do NOT need an FFL to order gunsmith only parts from Savage. They have a liability waiver that you sign and they'll sell you almost anything.

I've ordered several from them without an FFL. Did you ask them about signing a release waiver?
