The receiver on the bottom bolt release isn't milled like the top bolt release is

How many grains does it take to push a 160gr .308 to the same fps your getting from your 25 grain of RL-7

Something else to look at is trying a different brand of cases. I think they all have a little different volume.

Yup, I thought of that too. But in a case that size, I can't imagine gaining more than about .5-1 grain, plus the Lapua cases are so darn nice. I have some Winchester brass and they have about the same volume.

With my .308, I was loading about 37 grains of H4895 under 150's and 160's to get 2250-2300 fps. So roughly 10 more grains of powder in the .308, but again that's with H4895. I tried that powder in the 7.62x39 and it was pretty anemic.

I was more talking apples to apples. The same powder the same bullet and what was the powder diff to get the same results

Boo, hiss. :(

As for the powder difference, it's hard to say since I don't use RL-7 in the .308. I have used RL-15, but it's a different burn rate, so there is no good way to compare apples to apples.

Based on the velocities I saw when I tried H4895 in the 7.62x39, I would have to load that with close to 30 grains to equal what 37 grains in the .308 produces. I'm sure the size of the case/chamber creates more pressure with the smaller round, which is why we get better velocities with less powder. But I don't know that for sure. I'm still a little cloudy on how case size and room inside the case, seating depth etc. affect pressure.

What I have learned now is that I have a surplus .308 since my 7.62x39 can do anything my .308 did with reduced loads, and my 7x57 with strong hand loads gives me a 300-yard elk gun which is more than I may ever need anyway.

I got my stainless top bolt release from Numrich tonight and after about 10 minutes of fitting I now have a top bolt release LWH action.[emoji2]

I started working on my stock tonight. I have 3 hours in it now with 60 grit sand paper by block and hand and I'm making progress. The striping in the stock really pops when it is wet

The pictures don't do justice on how dark it is. It's not real dark by any means but I'd not as blonde as it looks in the pictures.
I'm not sure if I'm going to put a strain on it or not. Either way is going to be glossy

I did a little more work today. I had to remove about 1/2in from where the trigger is on the inside of the stock and had to clearance where the sear bends at the bottom as well as radius the back of the mag well at the corners to make the action fit square.
I'm pretty close to being sanded out at 60 grit right now. I don't have a palm sander so all the sanding has been done with a block sander by hand(I'm on my way to go buy a palm sander now). Anyways thought I'd give an update with some pics.

Oh Jim said that he put the rough cut on my barrel yesterday and it should be sent out beginning of the week.
