Decided to try the Lapua Scenars in 69gr... measured the distance to lands 5 times with random selection from the box.. and the average gives me a distance of 1.826 = coal to tip of 2.170. As the SAMMI spec. says coal should be 2.26.. is it ok to fire these rounds with the coal being so much below the SAMMI dimension?. I realise with the head being seated so deep into the case loads could be compressed so will start with lowest loads.
Rifle is .223rem 12 F/TR

The tip of the bullet isn't what touches the lands, it's the ogive of the bullet.
What the book says isn't really as important as what YOUR rifle has told you. Stuffing the bullets into the lands isn't good, unless you do it on purpose.

So Load for your rifle, and don't so much worry about a oal in the book. Depending upon what powder, etc. Having the bullet seated deeper isn't likely to really alter burning rate much. Just watch your velocity, to know where you are in your load range.

Cheers

thanks.. the measurement of 1.826 is taken from the ogive.. 2.17 to the tip.. as long as it is ok to fire such a short oal then I'm happy.. just need reassurance :smug:

Dr Brownell did a test in the 30-06 on seating depth.
Remember that this chart has depth in Inches.

Until you REALLY start packing on the powder, you don't alter the BR much. Shoot happily
