Wow, that's a sweet find.

Have you had it lettered yet?

I found a nickel up here in Canada once and called in a favor to have the serial checked, came back as leaving the factory blued but with the mags you have beside it I'm thinking a letter will come back legit.

Thanks! Yes click the link, left nickel. Handed down in the original owning family, gentleman who sold it is in his late 70's.

Geez, missed the shortcut but good to see it's legit.

Folsom Arms shows up on a lot of Savage Arms letters way back then, they must have been a leading retailer for Savage.

Yeah I had it lettered before closing the deal, it indeed was built in nickel in January 23, 1914 and purchased by the owner's grandfather, stayed in the family for 3 generations.

Always neat to see what number JC is on his letters, he's got over 8000 on them out now.

Are all the major parts marked with a partial serial number? I was once shown a sliver plated one and the owner showed me the number on the bottom of the breech bolt and said the slide was also marked, he explained that plated guns had to initially be machined with slightly more clearance to allow for the plating and marking them kept the parts form getting mixed.

O don't think the clarity of the lettering stamped on yours cannot be duplicated on one that was not originally plated, very nice.

I know this is an old thread but these genuine factory nickel savage pistols are rare and this is a rare opportunity to ask the owner about the markings that cannot be passed up. Your pistol is breathtaking by the way. My question echos an earlier post in this thread by Sav22 -

Are the major parts on your pistol - breechblock, slide, etc., marked with the serial number or part of the serial number?

This has always been the rumor of how to identify factory nickel pistols but I've never seen it verified in print or on-line. I know a letter from Mr. Callahan is the only sure way to know but when you see one at a gun show there isn't time.

If the parts are marked, can you please take some photos? I know I'm asking a lot given how busy we all are but it would help to know where to look, especially on the slide. If not, just a yes or no to the question will be enough.

Thank you very much for your time!

John

John thank you! I will take a closer look this week. It seems like I did look and didn't find any, it seems during the beginning of the production period they did the serialization and later stopped it on the plated pistols. I ordered the letter prior to the purchase, I was fortunate to have the time. I had converstions with Bailey Brower the author of Savage Pistols about this one when I was looking at it. Mr. Brower examined the pictures of the roll marks are well for crispiness, as well as the finish of the internals, he wanted it if I didn't so I felt good about it.

John I took a closer look, none on the the internals are numbered. I suspect as I mentioned early production parts may have been numbered originally and then the process was dropped. I'm including a pic of the internals to show you how clean it is.
