JB Weld Steelstik putty from walmart: 4$
High Temp Black engine enamal from my garage: Who knows, I've had it for years

I used a 7/8" 6 point socket as a cast. Coated the inside with shoe polish for a release agent, filled it with the JB Weld putty and then squished it over my bolt handle.

Layered some putt on the back side of the bolt handle as well.

Let it sit for a bit and pop the socket off.

After hardened I hit the edges on my grinding wheel and went to work on the base with my dremel.

Hit it with a few layers of black engine enamel, dry and hit with some 2K grit wet sanding. I lucked out hard with the color match, looks reallly realllyyy close.

Has some nicks in it I didn't care to fill and resand but overall I'm thrilled with it.

Thanks! Yeah hopefully it holds up. I don't think it will be an issue. The paint is high temp engine enamel and the JB Steel weld puddy is hard as hell. I was able to crack a spare chunk of it with a hammer... but I don't see my 10lb bolt lift doing anything to it... ever. As long as I avoid slamming it on the sidewalk or something I think it'll be good.... and if by some strange chance it does break it's just another 4$ project away from some other design.

One of the best things about casting over the original bolt knob is that if it breaks, you're still left with a fully functional bolt handle.

At least if you ever get some overloaded rounds that require a rubber mallet to open the bolt, you can use the lug nut wrench instead.

Not a bad idea, this particular example just looks out of proportion (short and fat). A 1/2" deep well 12pt socket might have been a better mold choice and then just trim it to the desired length.
