View Full Version : ring height for a Viper PST 6-24x50?

I had a Nikon Monarch X with a 44mm objective...and that was fine with Burris XTR low rings and an EGW (0? MOA) base. It only now occurred to me that the rings might be a bit low for the new Vortex scope (that will hopefully be here soon). Is anyone else using these Burris XTR low rings with the big Vortex Viper?

Rifle is a 12 LRPV in .223. Heavy barrel on that beastie! :)

Here shows my rifle with an EGW 20 degree rail with a 30mm tube scope with a 50mm objective. The second & third pictures from the bottom show how it mounts with the low rings. Hopes this helps.

Yes...that is helpful. Thanks! I dunno how the OD of my objective compares to the Osprey you have mounted in the pictures. Will have to wait and see I guess. From what I've read it will be close. If its really close I may take the opportunity to upgrade to a Farrell base...which are thicker than the EGW bases (I think) and hope that it raises the height enough to clear the barrel. Otherwise I'll just get a set of medium height XTR rings and be done with it.

Right now I'm scope-less (topless?) and haven't shot my Savage in weeks! Going through withdrawal...hope that Vortex shows up soon. Ordered mine from Optics Planet. Nice folks there and great customer support!

Joseph, I like that paint job on your stock! Very clever use of fish netting. What model Savage is that and in what caliber? Very nice...

I would give Scott at Vortex Optics a call... had the same question for ring height for a Viper PST 4-16X50 on a Savage 10 FCP HS. For my scope, he said the lowest ring height that would fit was 0.87" (top of rail on base to center of scope tube) and that was because of the eye piece. Although the website says that its 1.5", he quoted me a diameter of 1.67" (if I recall correctly). I believe the 6-24x50 has the same 'diameter' dimensions but differ in length dimensions...

I know this thread is a little older. Still hope someone can help me out. I have a Savage Model 12 VLP DBM and was thinking of putting a Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 on it. I currently have leupold mounts and rings on the rifle right now. Which Leupold 30mm rings will be tall enough to keep it off the barrel while not being too high?

These are the spec's from Midway USA on Leupold 30mm high rings.
Ring Height: .400" (measured from base of ring to bottom of scope tube)

Well you will have some time to make your decision! Last I heard its going to be next year before PST's start getting delivered.

I guess the Vortex scopes are more popular than I thought. However I guess no one has one mounted Like I'm intrested in.

I don't think anyone has one PERIOD!

:)

There are a few out there but production has been held up because of some issues with the turrets.

OK, I understand. Guess I should look at one of Vortex's other 30mm tube scopes to try out temporarily

I have the 6.5-20x44 V-Viper in low rings on my Savage 12 single shot custom. It clears with Burris Extreme Tactical two piece bases and Weaver 30mm low skeleton quad rings with 3/16" of room to spare. On my BVSS I used Weaver bases with Medium Millet's to just clear a 50mm Swift Premier. I don't think the manufacturers do a good job of maintaining consistency with what is considered low, med or high.
