Build Advice - 300 Win Mag Long Range Hunter

I was going to buy a Remington 700 Stainless R5 in 300 Win Mag for $1100 for Long Range hunting/shooting. But then got to thinking I could probably build one off a Savage action, with custom barrel and stock that will shoot at least as good if not better for the same money. I already built a .270 and .300 Win Mag sporter off Savage actions that shoot well.

If you could recommend the below components, what would they be? Please remember that this is a Long Range hunter so prefer a heavy barrel and stock.

Which Savage Action (Is there one that will allow me to seat long bullets out further):
Which Third Party Stock (want composite, not wood):
Which Third Party Barrel (prefer threaded if possible):

What you're looking for is in the classifieds, complete rifles. 300WM.

$400 complete.
Sell the stock for $50
Sell the barrel for $50
Sell the scope and rings for $75

Now you have a long action for $225

Order a barrel to your specs, around $400
HS Precision stock for another $300 and change.
And you're off to a good start.

I assume you are talking about this rifle? 300WM, 26” Shilen Select Match Barrel, $1100, excellent condition?

I appreciate the reply and the tip, but I do not want a Savage Tupperware stock and really have no need for a scope mount that elaborate. I was hoping for a similar price I could build one with a quality third party stock. Is that not the case?

For $449
-$50 mail in rebate, sold scope for $100, sold new barrel and stock for $150.
So I have a long action centerfeed action with magnum bolt face and magazine for $150.......
Tough to beat

That one looks like it should be a center feed......but I'm just going off of the hollow BAS, which could have been replaced.

This is one I built for a friend of mine a couple years back.

Savage 111 Action $400
Mcgowan 10 twist 26" Shilen #5 contour with Mcgowan brake & recoil lug. $450
Boyds Pro Varmint stock. $99
Total cost of build was right around $900 - $1000 after shipping and everything.

He is running 215gr Bergers right at 2900 fps and this thing hammers elk and deer like crazy.

Building the LA Savage is expensive. I had some great advice come from a friend at the range; that being "just buy the HS Precision Savage in 300 WM and you probably won't wild a more accurate rifle for less money."

I did not heed that advice and now I'm in a rifle for about $1600 before selling off extras... $500 Savage 111 Trophy Hunter XP, $700 chassis, Mag & Stock, $400 Shilen 26" bull barrel/barrel nut/recoil lug.

if you do go his route then go for the hinged floor plate type and not the DBM. The DBM really limits your stock choices. I would have been fine with a cheap Choate but nope... They don't make them in Savage LA DBM.

Agreed Lond. I wanted to find just the blind mag bottom metal for mine so I could do just that...

I bought the chincy plastic dbm model, and just took the plastic bottom off the magazine and use it in the blind mag, it's the same mag box for all the centerfeed configurations I believe (dbm, blind mag and hinged fp)

I do want an action that will allow me to feed the longer bullets close to the rifling. How can I be sure I am getting a centerfeed action? They don't make a centerfeed with blind magazine, correct? I guess I have a lot to learn about all of the various components, as I don't want to buy an action that is too short, or get one that doesn't have a bunch of stock options.

Yes they do, well at least they used to make one. on a staggerfeed the mag is attached to the action. On a centerfeed its attached to the stock

Im surprised nobody has mentioned to simply just go buy the Savage LRH in 300 win mag. I have the Bear Hunter in 300 win mag and almost bought the LRH. I still might get one for my son. They are already set up for Hunting, you just need base, scope and mounts. My Bear Hunter is under 1 inch at 100 with cheap factory Winchester PowerPoints and has very little recoil with the brake on. I am going to be doing load development soon and will tighten that up even more. The LRH is about a pound more which would be nicer so you can spot your own hits. Its the only thing I dont like on my Bear Hunter. Its just another option for you to consider.
