need some 6br help

Several years ago I purchased a savage 6br 12 twist s/shot rifle there are no markings on the barrel except this and these are inside of the barrell. I got sick and finally am able to start checking this rifle out. I have a box of 50 lapua brass and had the neighbor make me a dummy to put in this rifle Well it wont go completely into the chamber of course I cannot close the bolt. The neighbor is very competent reloader he knows his stuff.

Is there such a thing as this barrel was chambered for Norma 6br if so is the brass that different? I wonder if someone has a piece of Norma 6br brass they could send me I will pay the postage to you. My thoughts was this was a McGowen barrel but they say they always mark their barrels but I think think they are fibbing because I have a practicle 20 with no markings on it either and I purchased it new from Northland.

8 discs fixed and fused and 2 rods with all the drugs has messed up my memory!!!

Take a chamber cast and pay particular attention to the neck diameter. You may need to turn your case necks.
Try to chamber a resized unloaded round to see if it will chamber. A loaded round should be at least .003" larger at the neck, so it may just be a simple matter of turning a couple thousandths off the case neck thickness.

If the bolt is very close to closing then you might try this as well. Being a custom barrel check your head space with a gauge and if it needs to be backed off do that and then try to chamber the brass again. If still no go, bump the shoulder of one piece of your brass until it fits. Find someone with a case head space gauge and see if it falls close to SAAMI.

The 6mm Norma and the 6mm Remington BR both have identical case dimensions, the only real difference is that the Norma version has a longer throat more suitable for VLD bullets. Another trick you can use to see if your necks will need to be turned is to pull the expander ball out of your sizing die, full length resize, and then try to chamber that empty case.

Many thanks for chipping in the casing will not ever go close to going into the chamber. That is why we thought maybe I needed an actual norma 6br piece of brass. oh well back to the drawing boards!!

cwop, I don't think your memory is messed up that bad. I too have a McGowen that is not marked as such. I bought it used, also reported new from Northland. Several emails to McGowen customer service, with pictures, and they claimed it as their barrel. Looks like this:

That barrel looks and has identical markings to my Shilen 7mm Mag barrel.....everything in the same exact location, only the numbers are different due to caliber and twist. ETA: Nevermind. I just looked up the original FS thread and it's in fact a McGowen.

Take the barrel off, and drop a case into the chamber. It should stick out about .125". If it sticks out considerably more than that, it is probably a tight neck.

First off the 6mm BR Norma and the 6mm Remington BR do not have the same case dimensions, the Norma has a longer neck, about 0.040" longer, than the Remington. If it is a factory chamber, it should be a Norma chamber, the Lapua brass and the Norma are the same. Norma standardized the 6 mm BR chamber years ago, the Lapua brass is marked 6mm BR Norma on the head. If it is not a factory chamber, it could be a Remington chamber, with a shorter neck, or tight neck, or both. Try just a new Lapua case and see if it chambers.

Berger manual sez the cases are the same (within a couple ten thou). only the throats are different, the remington being .240 shorter.
and w/ a 12 twist it might as well be the remington chamber cause 80g bullets are as heavy as can be stabilized. 14 prolly 70g
always wondered why the 6br LRPV w/ 12 or 14 twist is chambered in norma and not the shorter remington throat.
that much jump is surely detrimental to accuracy.

your solution is prolly a few more 2-3-4 thou shoulder bump
