260 Long Range Shots- With Video

Milk jug at 1,428 yards. Fired 6 shots. 2 hit jug, another hit steel target that was behind jug (the one next to me in the pic). Not to shabby for the first time at that distance

This is my proudest shot so far. Shot in same area but on a different day then the milk jug

1 lbs IMR powder container at 1,440 yards. The beer can in bottom pic is for size comparison.

I actually saw a nice buck in that area but couldn't get a reliable range on it. Was between 915-1050 yards. So I didn't even attempt a shot. This deer I had a bait pile that I shot at. Bought a doe tag specifically for this shot. I did have a buck tag tho if he'd come where I could range him.

Believe me that 260 wasn't knocking anything off a deer at that range.

Actually Mcree chasis. Doe fawn. That's why it's so small lol hit through the heart but took a couple shots. My wind wasn't cooperating with me. I even shot prior to hunting. Wish I had my lapua. Was not impressed with the hole/knockdown power. The fact it hit the heart was a godsend. Don't think it woulda died otherwise. I can promise I will be using a bigger gun next time at that range

I was using 142 smk bullets. They worked awesome from 600-800 yds on deer. But at this range there basically useless. Crunched numbers after and found out I hit with under 500 lbs of knock down power. Lesson learned

Well get used to the idea that regardless of cartridge, its not always bang flop.
If your serious about hunting this way, consider using the gun you have untill youve aquired other
equiptment, which can actually be more essential than the gun for this type hunting.
Also you should hunt with a buddy, who can help keep things sorted out when all dosent go as well as youd like.
Ive watched them get hit with 300 gr 338s in a good spot and never even flinch. Just walk off as though not touched.
Now they didnt walk all that far before folding up dead, maybe 100 feet. But would a lone hunter be able to observe all that?
Or would he have questioned wether he had even hit it? Ive also seen them get back on their feet after being pronounced dead
and the shooter leave to go fetch them. Again just stumble a short distance before piling up for good. But far enough to cause
panic when you arrive and its gone. Especially if its now dark, and by tomorrow the coyotes might have gotten to it first.
Consider placing milk jugs at various locations at the place you hunted. Envision what a deer might do if hit and runs off
say on an angle, or up, down, or across the hill he is standing on. Could you stay on a running deer with your setup?
So that when it stops even way over there, your ready for a follow up shot say right now? In about a minit or less your buddy
could advise you of the new distance, but would you be ready? Youve proven that you can do it, but your questioning the results.
A bigger hammer wont change that.

I agree yobuck. I need a spotter lol. I'm making a shooting loft this year to shoot this area. My own elevated shoot house to shoot to 1100 yards. Won't be as far back as I shot this deer from but will give me a great vantage point to hunt/practice from

I shot a deer at 1000 as well this year with my lapua. Put a whole the size of a softball in the deer. Easy tracking for the short distance it went. Huge difference in terminal damage. Shot was just behind shoulder/above heart on that deer

Since you own the Lapua, by all means use it. I wasent aware you had that. Lots of us can lay down prone with a bipod and
amaze ourselves shooting at various type targets at considerable distances. But the location we shoot from is selected, the target location
is selected, and even the weather conditions we shoot in are selected. None of that is apt to be true when hunting.
So cheat whenever its possible to improve your performance. Pride should take a back seat when shooting at live targets.
The shooting shack is a great idea if you can build one where you hunt. It will also allow for hunting in poor weather conditions
by keeping the equiptment dry. Definatly build a shooting bench or incorporate one into the design of the shack.
Consider having the front lift up and remain up with some type of a prop arraingment. Except for the bottom part which could serve
as the bench. Windows fog up unless their insulated glass. The propped section also serves now as a roof to help keep rain further away
from you and the equiptment. Glasses, glasses, glasses, big tripod mounted glasses, are your most important item of equiptment.
Without them your driving without headlights. A spotting scope is simply ok, and that includes $2000 ones. Close one eye and walk around for an hour
to get the (picture). I could email you some pictures of what im talking about.

Mine will be prone shooting. Mostly target during summer. My lapua is being rebarreled right now. There's a thread in my page for that if your interested. I put a lot of time and dedication into making this shot and chose to push forward with the 260 when my lapua failed me. If I hadn't committed myself I would probably not have attempted this.

I love chasis. I have two mcrees and the ba chasis for savage. I don't know if savage makes this model or contracts it out. I can tell you the Mcree is a better built system and way more versatile for qd sling mounts etc. If your ordering from xlr, get the folding stock if they make one. Well worth the money. Mcrees locks while folded but wouldn't bother me if it didn't. I fold it for measuring chamber for oal and cleaning. Also fold to look down barrel for bore sighting scope. My one mcree doesn't have folding stock but I use a bore snake generally to clean that rifle. The ba has a magpul prs buttstock. Easily collapses the comb but looking at the design of it I can't imagine it will stand up to up/down movement as many times as I would fold my mcrees. Time will tell on that though

The 260 with a berger vld hunting bullet might give you a little more expansion at long range. With my load I am around 640 ft-lbs of energy at your range. What is your load and ftps?
