The 260 with a berger vld hunting bullet might give you a little more expansion at long range. With my load I am around 640 ft-lbs of energy at your range. What is your load and ftps?

My data shows 560 lbs knockdown.

142 SMK .010 off lands
42.5 gr H4350
CCI BR 2
Lapua case trimmed to 2.025
Annealed every firing
2835 fps

Lee collet die
Forester bench rest seater

Shot several 3 shot groups the other day at 100 yards while testing a scope. They measured .267", .301", .278". My groups during load testing were
300 yds: .37" (.12moa) - 3 shots
600 yds: 2.64" (.44 moa) - 5 shots

Have shot several groups at 300 that could be covered with a dime. I won't switch this load as I plan on running it for comps this summer and would like to practice etc. My lapua will be my primary long range hunting rifle, when I get it back. That's got 1,555 lbs of punch at that range.

Why modify the shovel when you have a bulldozer along side it lol

Not to hijack, but:

I just picked up 4K of the BR2's for $126. Been using the CCI 200's and getting a pretty wild ES. Have you compared the ES of your groups using the BR2's vs 200's? I'm hoping they prove to be more consistent, and if not I can sell them and make money.

I've been getting Sub 10 ES/SD's with CCI200's in my 243. Are you sure it's the primers and not another source in your loading?

I have tested them In a 308 barrel I used to have. I shot at 300 yards. Never noticed a difference. Don't remember the chrono results, don't think I wrote them down because it was a wash. My 260 shoots a hair better than the 308 did but we're talking still under .5 moa. So I haven't tested in this gun. I honestly ordered them during the crisis a few years ago when you couldn't find anything. I got 5000 cci 200 primers during that time and then received my br2's. Think I use them just for the warm fuzzy feeling, idk.

Annealing however made a big difference in that gun. Shot 2, 5 shot groups and the annealed shot ES of 18 fps vs 38 fps for not annealed. Also shot 1.5" group annealed and about 2" not.

its the B stamped in the cup that makes the BR-2s better.

Not at all. I fl size after every firing using a lee die. Trim and clean in ultrasonic, weigh each charge, and consistent seating depth. The chrony I'm using is a range freebie, a cheap caldwell I believe. The only variable I'm aware of is neck tension. I do notice inconsistencies from time to time in the amount of feedback I get from the press when seating bullets. Could be the whole problem.

The inconsistent neck tension could be brass that's work hardened. This is where annealing comes in. How many rounds on brass? What does it group like? If it shoots well the cheapy chrono could be reading incorrect

Forgive me, I'm getting two lots of cases mixed up.

The cases I'm noticing a high ES on are probably on their 4th or 5th firing, without annealing, and give me very consistent feedback from the ram. If I had to guess, I would say that neck tension is very consistent from case to case after fl sizing. They group extremely well when I do my part, but showed about 100 fps ES from the first to last (third) shot in the group. ES for the entire session of 36 rds was 187 fps, and std deviation of 47.14. If the chrono is correct, this is no big deal at 100 yds, but potentially catastrophic at 1K yds.

I think I need to use a decent chrony before I go changing things.

with an SD of 47fps and an ES of 187fps its not the primers...you have some other issues going on...if your shooting LC brass id suggest you start there...anneal your brass and check the internal case capacity of all your brass and i bet you cut 160fps off your current ESs.

That would be the first thing I would do. If your weighing charges, not throwing them I can't imagine it would be that far off . The other thing I'd watch is you barrel heat. If you really beat it up it could cause pressure to rise. You notice the fps climbing every shot generally. Most Reloader powders as well as IMR 4064 are some temp sensitive ones that come to mind

LR beat me to the punch on response. My first sentence refers to chrony. Try that before switching anything

Well would leaving a round chambered in a heated barrel for a period of time
show the same results as those being fired in rapid succession?
Knowing all this im wondering why more 1000 yd target shooters dont gamble
on wind changes and let the barrel cool between shots. Rather than machine gun
10 rounds down range in under a minit as many of them do.

I single load right before I take my shot, will definitely check case capacity if problems persist after verifying mv with a good chrony. Thanks for the tips gents.

I just put together a 260 Rem using a Shilen chrome moly barrel in 8 twist. I hope I can get mine to shoot as good as yours. :thumb:

I actually saw a nice buck in that area but couldn't get a reliable range on it. Was between 915-1050 yards. So I didn't even attempt a shot. This deer I had a bait pile that I shot at. Bought a doe tag specifically for this shot. I did have a buck tag tho if he'd come where I could range him.

Believe me that 260 wasn't knocking anything off a deer at that range.
Nice shooting, where the heck in MI can one see/hunt 1000 yards out?

My family owns a Christmas tree farm. This particular area is 480 acres. I'll post some pics of the area I shot in. I took several pics that day of the shot location. We have a garage that houses some equipment and that is overlooking an 1100 yards stretch of field. This garage is where I'm building a shooting port from for hunting and LR shooting. This field is about 300 yards wide, so a good coverage area.

I took a pic from where I shot which was behind this garage laying in my uncles yard. Nice thing is this location is 5 miles from my house. The shot on the 4064 jug was from my sisters property shooting across 2 others people property (yes I got permission) and back onto the tree farm.

I'm also going to work on the YouTube video this weekend and see if I can't get that working

Just tried the YouTube thing. I have a YouTube account but can't seem to upload. I click upload and "upload as" box pops up requiring me to enter first and last name etc. but will not allow me to type in that box. Then I click on create channel and it requires me to fill in those boxes that it won't let me fill in......
