I just finished up a new build for a buddy, has a AED in his chest due to heart conditon ,cant shoot anything with recoil. Went to the rang today to zero and try some old tried and true loads on a new build.First here is the specs. A new accutrigger 111, .270, rebarreled with Shilen Stainless super select match 6.5x55, 8 twist, magnum sporter, .700 muzzle diamter, courtesy of Northlander, Thanks JIm! I indicated and trued the action, roughed up stock and steel bedded action with brownells steel bed, floated tang with . Used the factory recoil lug, I know, but can always get a new one if needed. I installed a Que Industries adjustable muzzle brake, the kind you press on and heat a retaining band of special alloy, has 100 clicks of adjustment, same as BOSS, 5 minutes to install! I put on Warne, steel weaver type extended bases, epoxied, and Millet high Extended rings, Leupold 4x12x50 standard cross hair. This also has the new cushy pad/stock on the savages, nice. Centered it all up, boresighted and to the range. First shot at 25 yds was1/2 low dead center,s hot #2, same hole, Win 140gr. factory load. Went to 100yards, was 2 inches left2 low with same ammo, shot 3 shot, .670, center to center. Then went to 120gr. Sierra SP, lapua brass, 2950 fps chronoed, first 3 shots were same zero as 140 winchester factory, .490 group. Group #3, 3 shot was into .280, #4, 3 shot was into .270. I have the Boss set on dead center, has 50 clicks either way, is standard starting point, I am not touching it. #2,3,4 were all with my Sierra handloads that I have used for years, killed a lot of varmints and tons of deer, shared this load with several of you on this forum. Recoil is like a .223 LRPV. I broke the barrel in with shoot 1 shot and clean for20 shots, shot 5 and clean, then good to go. I have it zeroed 2..5 inches high at 100, will do some field testing tonight on some chucks! Just thougt I would share.

Sounds like a winner. And you are someones good friend for sure. Good to see that among the brotherhood of the barrel nut.

;D skoger,

I built one of these 6.5 Swede's about 2 years ago with a Shilen barrel. It shoots 140gr. Berger VLD's into one ragged hole at 100 yards and the 120gr. Barnes triple-X's will do the same. Both loaded over RL-22.

The round and the gun are both just plain awesome! I quit loading my .308!! In fact, I turned my Stevens .308 into a .17 Fireball.

You'll love it!!

Dave

Dave Muzz funny you mention the triple shocks, just loaded up some 120grns tonight. I am a 6.5 swede convert of 25 years. When I ran a gunshop full time for 12 years, I built and sporterized over 100 swedes, still have one that was unissued that I sporterized, turned the barrel, drilled and tapped, bent the bolt, timney trigger and parkarizied the finish, synthec stock. That was 1985, still shoots under 1/2 inch. The 120TSX do the same or better than a 140-150 gr. conventional load. I am going to try these in this new rifle and my old one tomorow. Yep, they way outrun the .308 in my book, long barrel life, light recoil, and they kill stuff really well. I have taken deer out to 500 yds with the 120sp Sierra load. My main old gun that I have had since 1985 has taken over 40 deer, 670 woodchucks, and around 400 crows. I am considering retiring it, but it is like an old friend.

Here are pic's of my Savage built Swede. BTW....mine is built on a M-12 short action. Yes, this can be done! Even with loading the Berger VLD's 140gr.'s I could still extract an unfired round......but the clearance was maybe .002!!! :P

I have become a huge fan of the Swede also however mine is the AI version. I'm betting you will like it more every time you shoot it. I use mine for prairie dogs, pigeons and two weeks ago I shot my first F-class with it. My chamber was cut with a reamer set up for the 120gr NBT's and I shoot them right at 3050fps. Having never shot F-class before I didn't really know what to expect but a fellow board member told me the 6.5's are almost like cheating. I ended up with a 300yd score of 195x7 and a 600yd score of 189x3 and that put me second out of 16 shooters. The first pics shows from left to right a fired 6.5x55AI, then my fire form load with the 120NBT and to compare, a 20 Vartarg. Second pic is the Vartarg on the left and Swede on the right.

I hope you got them wood stocks cheap. They got all those ugly dark lines in 'em. ;)
