Hello All, I am a long time owner of Savage bolt action rifles and slug guns but a new member to this site. Since you are so knowledgeable on these types of topics I though I would ask for some advice. My goal is to built a 200-250 yard deer hunting rifle in the 450 Bushmaster cartridge which is now legal in Southern Michigan. I bought a new 12FV in 308 as the basis for this project. My intention is to buy a barrel from Apache Gun Works which will a Green Mountain stainless steel 24" long with 1:16 twist in the heavy varmint contour. My question is if anyone can recommend a good gunsmith near me who can put this together for me. Any additional advice you can provide would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

One of the great things about the Savage barrel nut system is the ease with which a person with minimal mechanical skills and some fairly inexpensive tools can change the barrel. I just finished changing my first Savage barrel from a .270 sporter, to a .308 varmint and felt a great sense of accomplishment with minimum stress. There is a wealth of information on this forum and Youtube about how this is done and what is required. After some reading, you may want to do it yourself, but at the very least, if you decide to have it done, you will know what is involved, which can save you a trip to the cleaners.
