I'm 43 and Just started hunting ( why it took so long I don't know !) and I was looking to buy the savage 212 or 220 and I was comparing them to a Mossberg 500. I'm not too sure how the bolt action is but the gun is really nice in my hands. If I was the choose the savage which gauge should I go with? I want accuracy first. Doing a lot of research and good reviews for either 12 or 20 gauge but most are saying 20. Thx

I own a Mossberg 500 with a built in scope rail . I have taken several deer with it over the years and tried several brands of sabot slugs in 12 gauge . It's very accurate out to about 80 yards . Beyond that it gets unpredictable . A friend of mine has a Savage 220 and shoots the Remington Accu Tips . He has 2 kills at about 150 yards shooting across a cut down corn field . Very impressive for a slug . I was there on one of the hunts so I can verify where his ground blind is and where we picked up the blood trail . Found the deer about 30 yards away in a thicket of thorny branches . The 220 impresses me a lot .

220 is more than enough. Why beat your shoulder up when you are already firing 260gr slug? The 12 is 380 gr I think.
12 gauge makes sense for bird hunting but 20 is plenty for slug hunting.

Definitely the 220. Less recoil to deal with and the 20ga slugs shoot a fair bit flatter letting you stretch the range more easily.
