I want to put a heavy barrel on my new Savage Axis II, I will only target shoot at range, how do I figure out twist and length, pretty new to all this rebarreling:disturbed:

First, since your re barreling, why do you want to target shoot with a 270Win? No matter how tough we are, heavy recoil can make us shoot bigger groups.

What range target shooting? 100 to 300 yards, or out to 1,000? It doesn' take a 270Win to punch holes in paper, even at 1,000yds. It's advantage is in bucking wind at long range, at the expense of recoil punishment.

The answers to these questions will be very helpful in answering your questions. :-)

X2 When I get threw a 50 rd load development with my .270 I am really fighting recoil flinch toward the end. If you were wanting a double duty rifle like to use for hunting and target shooting I could understand, but ammo cost alone would deter me from buying a .270 for target only.

It would cost less money to buy an Axis heavy barrel in .223, than to rebarrel. A lot more pleasant to shoot just making holes in paper.

According to Savage's website (http://savagearms.com/firearms/model/axis2xp), it's a 1:10.

Am I correct the 1-10 twist is better for heavier bullets at longer distance.

1 in 10 is an all around average twist in a 270 Win.
