best axis hunting bolt handle ????????

Axises aren't really a great choice for lightweight, short action rifles, but the factory handle is almost certainly going to be the lightest. A handle from Glades Armory, who I think is the only source of aftermarket bolt handles at the moment, probably isn't going to save much weight if any.

If you want a bigger knob (and who doesn't?), and are willing and able to do it yourself, you could use a phenolic oval knob. Phenolic can be shaped like wood with an increased need in respiratory protection. The oval knob can be made into whatever shape you can fit on it. I've done a few:

The second one is harder to see, but I ended up checkering it after I reduced the diameter with a drill and belt grinder.

That said, any aluminum knob is going to be pretty light too so long as you have a threaded handle.

GLades makes nice handles. Be sure to get the one made specifically for the Axis models. There is a difference. I don't think you will need to alter or file anything away.

I'm still trying to figure out why most of you guys insist on installing big gawdy bolt knobs on your rifles that are long enough to serve double-duty as a kickstand. A slightly larger than factory knob is nice on a tactical or competition gun, but some of these manufacturers and DIY'ers have lost their minds in the last few years with their offerings.

For a hunting rifle I prefer something small and simple that won't catch on my my clothing when I am slinging it over or taking it off my shoulder. It shouldn't protrude very far from the rifle and shouldn't hang down below the belly of the stock. This also helps prevent it from snagging on branches and the like when you're working your way through the woods with it slung over your shoulder.

Here's a few shots of the modified factory bolt handle on my .284 Winchester build. All that's needed is a bench grinder and a little time. The factory knob was ground down into a flat paddle. The hump or radius was simply ground off top and bottom to give it a slimmer/flatter looking profile which also provides a little more clearance for the ocular bell of the scope. The only thing I would do different would be to add checkering/knurling the flat's on the paddle to give it a little traction, but it works very well as it.

Best part, it's pretty much free other than the cost to refinish it. I was having everything blasted and parkerized on this build anyway so it didn't matter.


In contrast, here's the teardrop knob Fred made up for my .223 Axis build this last summer. Again it's the factory bolt handle that's visited the grinder and was then threaded to accept the screw-on teardrop similar in profile to his 110 Tactical bolt knobs. It's quite a bit longer and sticks out twice as far ass the one above. With the trued and timed action the added length of this knob truly makes cycling the bolt effortless, though the added length also results in a longer arc of travel.

Haven't spent a lot of time using this one yet, but I'm already thinking I may have Fred do up a replacement that mimics the old factory Hersey's Kiss style 110 bolt handle.

I think you touched on the reason in your post, Furious. Lengthening the bolt handle is a simple way of making opening the bolt easier. If every Axis action were as slick and easy to cycle as as Fred's TTT-ing makes them, there'd be less call for the added mechanical advantage of a longer bolt handle. Heck, if there were even a lift kit for Axises there might be lower demand for handles.

I ordered one 12/16 and hey tell me by email that it shipped. USPS doesn't have anything to offer except that they were notified that there would be a package shipped with that number. I have tried three emails to Glades to inquire on the handle but have never gotten an answer. Ever had any problems with Glades personally ?

I have never had any issues with glades. Also Boots builds a nice handle for the axis. His contact info is on apache's website

Yeah, I know that's why most guys get them, but it's just a band-aid fix that does nothing to address or resolve the real problem.

Not that the bolt lift bothers me, I like to tinker. I went to do the lift mod on my 116 only to find out my bolt is different (newer design). I made some measurements of the parts and ordered some 6x11x4.5 bearings off ebay. The plan is to put one bearing assembly between the 2 springs along with a washer at the back of the BAS. I'll be taking out the ring between the 2 springs also. This will help decrease the size of the washer needed on the BAS. I'll start a new thread with results when they get here (6 wks....slow boat from China). If it don't work out, I'm only out $7.

Not intending to hijack the thread, just share what I plan to do that may help since "bolt lift" came up.

Ordered an Axis bolt handle from Glades 12/16/15. Today is 1/16/16. No handle as of yet.
I got a drop-in barrel from ARP in one fourth of that time.

Before anyone else sees this and runs with it, as I replied in your other thread this isn't going to help anything and given the added thickness of the washer you used you're ultimately reducing firing pin energy which can result in ignition issues from light primer strikes.
