Ive decided I absolutely need a speedy .224.
Right now I'm thinking between the 22BR, 22-250 AI, and the 220 Swift.
Anyone running these and if so, why did you pick what you did and would you do it again? Comments on twist would also be helpful.
I understand the 22-250 AI and Swift could run heavies with a faster twist and the BR is probably 50-55 gr fodder.
Intended use- Toy/Coyote liquidator :o

I vote for the .22-250 Improved just because I love Ackley cases and thats one of the best ones to improve. I would also throat and twist it around the new 77gr Tipped Match King for a multipurpose target and coyote rig.

You know, that's probably a good idea as I already have the regular 250 in an AI. Excellent point. Maybe I was overthinking this?

I have a soft spot for a swift. It was the first rifle I ever bought and has been great. I shoot a factory 1:14" rem, have well over 2800 rounds trough it, and am now switching over to .260 rem to get a more competent long range rifle. I never shot any bullets larger than 55 grains but I have pushed them as fast 3900 fps (a little faster if it was a hot day). 52g smk's are my guns favorite. They are grenades on anything coyote sized and smaller. Follow up shots were never needed when I hit the animal in the front half of the body.

You, or at least I, will never fill a case. Case density usually hovers around 88-90% with both varget and imr 4064.

55grain and smaller bullets at 3600fps+ are absolute laser beams. Out to about 300 yards, that bullet gets there right now. 40 gr bullets at 4200 fps? Shhh. Don't tell Remington, but yeah. It works. Won't cut the wind for spit but it sure is fun to light up ground squirrels and see nothing left. Also fun to light up chronographs and tell your friends.

On calm days, 650+ is doable with 50-55's. Not much left in the for energy at that range but you can shoot em that far. 400 and in? Just plain deadly for the kind of stuff you are talking about.

What fun is getting a "swift" to stuff with 77 grain bullets and shoot 3400 fps? If you want a fast .224, shoot that sucker fast. With bullets that are made to go fast.

just my opinion. I love the swift. When I am in a better position, and can have a dedicated varmint/fun gun, I will go with a swift.

Umm...have a standard 250 and love it....smoked some prairie dogs just past 400 with it back in July. So AI would be even better.
Have a swift barrel and a 22br barrel sitting in the drawer waiting to be put on actions after first of year. I personally dont think you can go wrong with either of the 3. Theyre all great rounds.
Good luck!
Let us know what you decide.

Awwww, you had to stick the swift info in there to torment me.
I'll let you know which way it ends up.

What he said. 19: twist should throw the 77's very nicely.

22 BR is a sweet cartridge, very accurate, very easy to load for.

If you go 22-250 in a custom barrel, go AI. 22-250 brass grows very fast and I hate trimming cases. I have both.

22-250 (thin factory barrel) shooting 52 gr Sierra HPBT match 1410's that is deadly on prairie dogs. These 1410's are very accurate and expand even at 223 velocities out to 600 yards. Not all match bullets expand, but these do. I also carry a couple of rounds loaded with Sierra 65 gr GameKings in case I see a pig or other large varmint when I am walking around.

22-250 AI shooting 75 gr A-max.

Naw, none of those are fast enough. I like my 22-243AI.
