I just got my first Savage Axis and i'm really impressed with how it shoots for a cheap rifle. My question is how does the pre fit barrels work, are they chambered and ready to go? Do you need to have a smith do the work?

Thanks

The prefit is ready to go you just need a barrel nut wrench, barrel vice it action vice and you're good to go

Yes they are chambered and ready to be installed and can be acquired many of the sponsors here. Jim at Apache does great custom work if you don't mind a wait, or get one ready to go from AccurateBarrel or GunShack. Like futurerider said you just need a few items for the swap , in addition you will also need headspace gauges.

If you are changing calipers 223 -308 or 308- 223 a bolt head chg. will be needed
no need for a smith if have the tools ( action wrench,BBL. nut wrench, head space gauges)
If you like Savage the tools are money well spent
Welcome to the addiction
