Just loaded some .223 Hornady 80gr A-max's (had trouble finding load data for these!). The distance to lands in my chamber (12 F/TR) with these heads is 1.840"
So I loaded to lands minus .005" to start.. but this gives me a c.o.a.l. of only 2.374" - that is quite a way below what most others seem to be getting with these 80gr'ers.. Should I be concerned about this cartridge length?.

Nope Just start low and work your load up. Every barrel is different and internet wisdom is worth just what you paid for it. I have some loads that i was still supersonic with last year but this year they were going trans sonic around 950yds. Different conditions and a little more wear on the barrel. Just watch for pressure signs and when you get sign back off a little as that likely means you are overpressure by the time you see or feel pressure problems.

yep..be careful.
if anything?...id be more concerned with charge. those 80s create pressure quickly.
I gave those 80s a try but I couldn't get them to fly right out of my 1-8.

Would they work better in a 1 in 7 twist or is that a bit too tight for them?

Watch velocities for Pressure, not "signs".
When you match/exceed Pressure tested book data, you have also exceeded book Pressure.
