Hey Nyles, seriously if you want any consistent accuracy from factory loads. get a 6.5 Creedmoor ammo is very reasonable cost wise if you shop around, you can get them for less than $25.00 a box. And be less than 1/2 inch groupings just stay ahead on your ammo supply, you can even sell your spent brass to buy more ammo. Heck I would be the first in line.

Ok I'm listening... what does the creedmoor offer over the 260?

308 is the most economical to shoot in terms of factory ammo and you can get it everywhere, even at wallys.

nothing except cheap-er factory ammo over the 260...over the 308 everything except cheap-er ammo...i think you can squeeze just a little more out of a 260 but for what you want the creed would be your best choice IMHO.

The creed has high-quality factory ammo available on the shelf or least online at very reasonable prices. Ballistically identical to the .260

Just to tell you how close they are, you can make Creedmoor ammo out of 260 brass. just some minor trimming. and you can get a wider selection of hunting and target factory ammo.

If you plan on running a 6.5 in a ar-10 platform, the creed is the way to go. If you want the availability of factory ammunition at the bigger stores again, I would go with the creedmore.

If you plan on reloading, I would go with the 260. Anything the 6.5 creed can do, the 260 can also do. Pick you poison and don't look back.

+1 for the 6.5 Creedmoor.

The cool factor is real.

You wanted less expensive ammo and that is what it offers over the .260. Creedmoor match ammo is cheaper than a lot of factory .308 match.

Creedmoor is an excellent round. Been shooting it since 2008 and I really like it. Factory ammo is very accurate too.

Couple factory lots at 300 and 400(the longest I have at home)

Good choice on the 6.5, keep an eye out for sales, I've found the winchester ammo for under $19/box in the past. A little slower than the AMAX but still 1/2 moa. Prime 130's are getting good reviews too. http://www.primeammo.com/6-5mm-creedmoor-hpbt-130gr.html

Thanks for everybody's help working this out. Ordered a 6.5 creedmoor 18" varmint barrel today!

I'm a .260 guy, but the Creedmore has alot going for it. When we built my .260, we built an identical gun in 6.5 Creedmore. Both had 26" match barrels. Both turn in identical results at the range. A year ago the owner of the 6.5 wanted to build a hunting Creedmore for his daughter for her birthday. She is a small gal (5' tall 110lb) so he wanted to keep weight down as much as possible. When we built her gun we went with a 20" fluted barrel. Figured we would give up some velocity for 6" less barrel, but for the weight savings it would be worth it.
When it was done we used the same loads he had worked up for his 26" gun. After two 5 round strings, he called me to the computer to look at the results. I WAS SHOCKED, to say the very least. Velocity from the 20" barrel was IDENTICAL to the 26" gun. We then picked up a box of factory 6.5 ammo with the 140gr bullet and got similar results.

All that said, I think you will prefer the Creedmore over the .260 considering the short barrel you are using and that it doesn't sound like you plan to reload.----- Enjoy
