Anyone know of any fairly cheap stock checkering services?

You'll never see the words "cheap" and "checkering" in the same sentence.

Pieter there are many "how tos" out there on this procedure and probably 4-5 places on line that sell the tools needed. It is a time oriented hobby that is great for a retiree.
May be get a DVD and a few small pieces of hard wood some checkering tools and teach yourself. Then we could send projects to you :)

Ahlmans in Minnesota does a very good job and their prices and pattern are listed on their website.

i know... but I can always be hopeful! :) everyone always tells me I'm absurdly optimistic

the hand tools aren't too bad, I think I'll just pick up a pattern tool and a couple cutters and see what I can do.
Hardwood won't be too hard to come by. I've been living off my grandpa's stock of walnut for the past 15 years. 8)
He used to be the county engineer and what do you know.. a road was being built right through a grove of 100 year old english walnut trees.

Hey Nsaquam, I am thinking about having Ahlmans checkering my stocks. Have you personally seen any of their work?
Thanks
Charlie

Harrier, I have seen 1 or 2 stocks checkered by Ahlmans several years ago and as I recall they looked to be very well done.

I have always checkered my own stocks and for my bother. It is very time consuming and causes pains in your shoulders from tensed up muscles. I have done a few for cash but dont do it anymore. When I explain how long it takes and how much I want people seem shocked that I wont work for a dollar an hour. But, one guy in the know told me I did a good job and was asking too little money for the quality of work. I never knew what others get and never asked. So dont be shocked when you find out what it will cost.
