Savage Model 10 question

I am going to ask what will appear to be a simple question, if it has been taken care of before then please feel free to post a link to my answer.

I can find all kinds of Savage model 10 series rifles in 243 and 308, once I find out the exact hole spacing how hard it it to convert a 308-243-7mm08 to a 223 based (223, 222, 300 BLK, 7.62x40) rifle. I know I will need a new bottom metal and bolt face but is there any particular 10 series that is easier to convert? I will be looking for a used rifle or at best a hog hunter if they are still top bolt release.

In my area the 308 based rifles are cheap and common, and the 223 based rifles are not.

Ah ok, so it will just be new mags, that isn't so bad. I have been taken with my 110 build and am looking to condense my rifles down to a few bolt guns and my semi autos. So far I have a 270, 30-06, 358 winchester, and 308 barrel. And plan in the future to get a 375 Taylor and 416 Taylor barrel along with a 458x2", 280 AI and probably a 22-250 AI with a 1-8 twist.

It would be nice to be able to do this with my 223 sized cases in a savage 10, I currently have a 222, 223, 300 BLK, 7.62x40, and 6x45. One action and multiple barrels may be the way to go.

Yup. You'll be fine with just the parts you've mentioned. You might want to opt for an extended bolt baffle to shorten the bolt throw a little, but it's not necessary for functionality.

Where can I find a top bolt release savage 10 series for under $300. And if I get one for $300 will I really have $150 in parts?

I'm going to throw out another suggestion if you hand load. Why not go with a 22-250? Only difference in components affecting cost is a couple of cents per round worth of powder. Then you could stay with a much more prolific bolt head size and still have a .22 cal centerfire that's zipping right along and the only necessary conversion would be the barrel. Also would be able to go back to .308 at your leisure if the need arises.
Just my old curmudgeonly cheap straightforward and simple $.02

Best bet for an inexpensive donor or a ready to rock .223 is probably gonna be penny auctions at the big auction site and some patience.

Here is a 111 local for $250, and I have seen the 10 series for this price. So I do believe I can find one for $300 or less.

I do plan on a 22-250 since I reload, but I have a huge amount of rounds that are based off of the 223 family. I just used a 223 as the example because most would be familiar with it. But I personally have rifles chambered in: 222, 223, 6x45, 300 BLK, and 7.62x40 all of which take 223 sized brass. It would be very convenient if I could keep a rifle set up for this size case and use my 110 for the 308 size bolt face.

The 22-250 may be easier to get cast bullets to shoot in instead of my 222 since the case so much larger the pressures will be lower for equal velocities... boy I love a good project!
