I built a 6.5x55 this fall on a 110 action. The barrel is a cbi 28" 8 twist bull. I have it in a choate tactical stock, it is not bedded right now.
With most of the loads I have tried so far I get two touching and then two more touching .5" or so over to the right. It has done this with brand new lapua brass and fl sized with a type s bushing die with a .292 bushing. I have only shot 140 amaxs with h4831 and 4350. I have played with length some, but not a whole lot yet.
I torqued thr action screws to 30 in. Lbs when I put the stock on. I have not tried any other torque yet.
Maybe I am jumping the gun on it, but should I bed it and see how it preforms? I was expecting/hoping this barrel would should .5 moa without even trying.
any other suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Here are some of the groups

Check your tang to ensure that it is floated. This looks very typical of something touching somewhere where it shouldn't. Bedding never hurts either.

That's what I thought it looked like to me too. The tang has a pretty good gap, I believe the choate stocks are known for having a big gap back there.

All my choates, hs precision and chasis'a are torqued to 65 in lbs. Make sure you have a solid cheek weld to. Different positions even with a solid weld will change impact. By weld I mean your cheek to the stock.

Bed it now,why spend time and money only to bed it later. When I bedded mine it pulled the groups together. Just do it.

A quality scope with a parallax adjustment or good factory parallax usually fixes this.

Good article.

Might also want to give Reloader 22 a go in the 28" barrel.

I believe I found the problem with my 6.5x55.
I bedded it over the weekend, loaded up a few loads and gave it another try, with the same result.
I was looking the gun over again this morning and found that my scope was just hitting on the front edge of my 20moa rail. So, I pulled the scope off and beveled the rail some. When I put the scope on I could slide a piece of paper between it and the rail, everything was tight so I'm not sure what changed. Making the scope not touch the rail seems to have fixed the problem, imagine that.

The load still needs some work but it's way more consistent than it was before. I know I was moving around some when shooting this group and I know I pulled the top one, but I believe there is hope again!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!
