Savage 99 in .250-3000 - A Few Questions

Good morning gents,

I am trying to help my Father in Law nail down a 99 he purchased recently. Some information on the rifle is that its a take-down in .250-3000 with a flip-up rear peep. The rifle is in very nice shape and does not appeared to be re-blued but I am not certain because if the rifle is as old as I think it is, then it is in phenomenal condition for its age. The case coloring is strong. It has an H stamped in a circle on the lever boss. He ran it by some gents on the Savage 99 club on Facebook and stated possibly its value to be in the $1500 range but possibly up to $3500 if it was all original. The serial numbers are all matching. Can anyone confirm the date of manufacture and possible value?

I have one just like that but the wood on mine is not quite as purdy. As I understand it the last four digits of the serial # stamped on the bottom of the receiver just forward of the lever is the year of manufacture. Last four of mine read 1916.

Based on the info in Murray's book the serial number dates it to 1915. 1914 was the first year to use that logo on the butt plate and was the first year for the .250-300 Savage cartridge.

Most models of the 99 have letter designations, such as "G", "H", "F", etc. This rifle is simply called "The model 1899 .250-3000 Savage Rifle", and was a deluxe version that was only in .250-3000. It was introduced in 1914 and discontinued in 1921, and was replaced by the model "G" takedown rifle. It should have a fine cross checkered trigger, and shows the perch belly stock used on that model. Date of manufacture appears to be 1915. Missing the rear sight, an original, if available, won't be cheap, and without it, will detract from value. Hard to value this, but I will just say its worth what someone will pay you for it, I know that is not what you want to hear.

I appreciate the insight gents. He bought it at an estate sale for $500 and then after some research found it could be considerably more valuable. That was really the reason we got more curious because I couldn't find out more than what we knew at the time. Some guys on a savage 99 Facebook page suggested it could potentially go

Definitely worth $1500 at todays prices and the condition it's in but $3500 is taking it a bit to far, if you get a bite at that price grab the money and run.
