can I convert old style bolt face to the new one

so I have an old savage with the old style extractor and the ejector mounted to the box magazine. I want to do a caliber/barrel change. If i put a new bolt head on and grind off the ejector tit, am i good to go? or is it more involved than that?

nevermind. I"m just going to pick a caliber that uses the same bolt head. save a few bucks and some hassle.

If I'm understanding correctly, you have a controlled round feed bolt setup and want to switch to a push-feed setup. If that's the case, no need to grind down the standing ejector arm, just remove it. Everything else is just a simple bolt head & barrel swap.

Your'e not understanding correctly......he has an old pre '66 gun. In that case, it's not as easy as just a bolt head change. The cross pin location is 90 degrees different from current production. That means for a change over it requires a bolt body, firing pin, cross pin and the bolt head.

I know a guy who says he will give me a 308 bolt head, and if all I. Need at that point is a body, firing pin and cross pin, that's only 45 bucks of parts at numrich. That's not bad.

Doesn't your bolt head have a nose on it that recesses into the barrel? My first gen rifle does. You will probably need a gunsmith to machine the barrel for a bolt recess. Or you could try Numeric for a barrel that is already machined. The first gen rifles are a creature unto themselves.

Sounds like I do better to buy a new bolt, or just pay to have a barrel fitted with no nut to the receiver. Thanks for the help guys.

My first generation Savage 110L is a rebarreled nutless .25-06. I will not attempt to change anything on this rifle. It simply would not be cost effective and besides I have three other switch barrel guns to play with.
